He carries too much weight in the Democratic party and probably thinks it is inappropriate. When there is a nominee, he'll be actively campaigning for her/him, so it would be pretty weird if it was not the candidate he endorsed.

Actually I was trying to think back to... do most presidents not endorse during a primary? I think Bush did, but that's not surprising since Trump demolished his family's name lol.
