With all due respect to those who follow the Pope, I do not quite understand why a religious leader would accept or be provided a 21 salute. Granted, the man is a supposed head of State, but he is also a religious leader. The association with military fanfare, gun salutes, firing of military rifles, etc, seems in contrast to the peace, non-violence, etc., that the Christian Church is suppose to represent. I have heard that this is the most militaristic reception that a Pope has ever received in the U.S., and the first time a US President has received a Pope with a military reception on U.S. soil.
big friggin deal... its the pope... who cares if he comes here? seriously....
let the large congregations in washington dc welcome him.. why do we have to "nationally" create all this fuss for him? I don't think he's devine, a saint, or even worth saying hi to... what gives? We salute him.. and he'll promise to keep his priests from touching our kids? Is that how it goes?

You make an excellent point. One would think that the Catholic Church would host this guy and foot the bill, not the American taxpayer.
What about the separation of Church and State? A Church leader receiving a State reception seems a violation of the constitution.
All of this fanfare is another one of Bush's "bright" ideas.
I wouldn't wish death upon anyone.. not even the pope.. LOL.. but we all know how many thousands or millions have died as a direct result to previous pope's in history...
let "Our lady of horsecrap" welcome him and throw a big party... I certainly have no respect for him or his church... Imagine if our government did the same thing for the Mormon Prophet... people would be in an uproar....
its just ridiculous....I hope there's protestors... he needs to know people here think he sucks...

I totally agree with this. I am not Catholic therefore he holds no power with me at all. Now Mother Theresa I'd have saluted and probably kissed her feet b/c she really did something. The Pope, not so much.
My, my,my. Now it comes out. The pope is due arrival recognition suitable to a head of state. Its not his fault that Bush is trying to shore up support of Catholics.
Do folks realize:
*The first Catholic chaplain of Congress was in the last 5 or 6 years? The conservative Protestants kept any from serving until then. And you know who they supported in Congress.
*Unlike any other religions, Catholics in the US decided that the mission of their schools and hospitals is not dependent on the religion of the people being served. So when Catholics fled to the suburbs the city schools and hospitals stayed open. They are now buffeted because the current employees cost a lot more than they paid nuns and priests, but they stayed open.
*Anti-Catholic prejudice is alive and well in the US. It certainly did not end with any speech by JFK in 1960. Just ask Rev. Hagee in Texas.
*Among white folks, Catholics and Jews were the main proponents of civil rights. A priest got run over by a bulldozer in an early protest in Cleveland, Viola Liuzzo got shot in the head by the Klan, there were priests and nuns who marched in civil rights demonstrations. Yes, there were reactionaries like Cardinal Spellman, but, other than Billy Graham, you did not hear conservative Protestant clergymen preaching that racial discrimination was wrong.
Y'all leave the pope and Catholics alone.
