So it would only affect veterans, the group with the most gun training and the most injuries caused by serving their country. Sounds unfair to me.
It a was reporting process to NICS. The idea of which was to report people with mental illness so they would be flagged. Obamas executive action extended the same process to the SSA that the DVA used.
Only now they not only have to be mentally ill but deemed unsafe to themselves or others by a judge.

Many "mentally ill" are no danger to anyone.
I have a young relative who is deemed autistic. He also has CP in his legs. He has an IQ north of 150. He loves to go shoot at a range. You won't find anyone more careful than he is. He is on SSDI. This stupid order would have deemed him unfit to have a gun.
To remind you, Trump removed this law requiring such checks. He has to get at least some of the blame for firearms getting into the mentally ill hands due to his own signing of the bill to remove such people.
In the days of sanity, the INSANE were culled from society.
2019, the influencers have gone on a crusade that society must conform to the INSANE that now roam the streets freely, with every GOD given right(yes, to defend themselves with what they choose)
NOW, THAT IS INSANE!
There are different definitions of mental illness. The important thing is not to take guns away simply because their political beliefs are not like yours. There are responsible gun owners just like there are responsible drivers, responsible drinkers, responsible shoppers. Just because a few have a problem isn't a reason to punish everyone.
Most mentally ill people do not seek professional help because they don’t perceive they have a problem.
What is “ mysterious mental illness”?
All sorts that aren't diagnosed, "spectrum" types that lean weird and dislike people for a variety of reasons. Sorry be we've all seen it.
Most mass shooters did not test for positive for psych drugs.
Really? Seems to me all the Big Bad Scary White Boys that have turned up in the last 20 year have all had a history.
The world is full of loners and people who have problems making friends and most do not engage in mass shootings.
It's a combination of everything, don't cherry pick my comment.
Internet forums/ chat groups are comprised of anonymous people.
Like you and me, yes. But I have no idea if you are all of the above and also ranting on 8chan or some fringe group message board. Bubbles like that, combined with the above, are dangerous.
You seem to be repeating the fake news that Obama targeted seniors who don’t manage their own finances.
Maybe I was a bit simplistic, but it was a bad law.
Millions of people of ALL ages receive disability benefits from Social Security due to subnormal intelligence, mental illness mental incompetency including disease. No one can be forced to take medications.
There is absolutely no doubt that since Columbine, there have been mass shootings where the mental health of the perpetrator was a primary issue. Health care is a human right, and access to mental health care is equally as important as physical health. The lack of mental health services for youth, for veterans, and for all represents a serious private and public health concern within the U.S.
Although important, the focus on mental health problems as a single cause for the mass shooting crisis in America deflects from serious discussions of the common denominator—guns. If we frame the issue as one of mental health or exposure to violence, we delay actions related to addressing the primary tool of these assaults—guns.
Well then Ronald Reagan and GOP Congress shouldn't have repealed Mental Health Systems Act should they?

It goes to show that what is really needed is a reform of the whole psychiatric industry.
We won't get anywhere with the background checks until we get that first. Look at all the people who were on psyche meds, and passed the background check anyway. The Aurora, CO, for example. He was under psyche care yet was able to buy a gun.
When I was young, homosexuality was listed as a disorder in the official psyche diagnostic manual (DSM). Now homophobia is listed.
Now, the overall SJW mentality should be given a DSM entry.
