I'm so sick and tired of whenever there's a shooting or whatever, all these old people that have no idea what they're talking about like to blame video games, like after Columbine they pointed out how the shooters liked to play DOOM. It's not even a liberal/conservative issue as all of them like to blame video games for people behaving badly, like in '93 it was the democrats who had hearings and criticized violent video games, and mortal kombat.
Well, if the whole issue is "it causes people to be violent" shouldn't we ban sports? How many times after a sports game have crazy drunken sports fans went out burning cars, getting into fights, rioting etc.? All the time! But it's the video games that are the problem...sure.
I just hate how they always want to throw their 2c in things they no nothing about.

I think just about all of us enjoy a good hard-edged movie/video game/book/sporting match/play at least once in a while, because evolution has gifted just about all of us with the animal urge to defend and win, which means to physically win. But most of us are content with watching it play out in fiction.
So what triggers the intention to take it from fiction to reality? I dunno. There must be some trigger, but I don't think that movies, etc., are sufficient. Otherwise, more of us would be more violent more of the time. As horrific as these shootings are, they are still pretty rare.
I think we have all observed that some people seem to be touchier and more rage-filled from an early age.
I believe that video games give cover and excuses to people who are already anti-social, and also the ability to further retreat from IRL interactions with others. That said, I have two 20 something gamer sons who are well adjusted adults. IOW it depends on the person. I blame parents for not paying attention to what is going on in their sons' lives.
I think, along with a lot of other things, they could contribute. It would depend upon the person because some wouldn't be affected by them while others would be. What you do and what you watch can affect your mood and your behavior.
I believe video games desensitize people to the concept of killing. I remember many years ago, a game that was all over the news call Phantasmagoria*. Mothers wanted it thrown out of stores. Now that game would be considered nothing compared to a typical point and shoot Call of Duty style game.
*Of course because it received so much coverage, every kid wanted to play it.

I have a hard time believing anybody under 50 still believes this argument. Older boomer conservatives always seemed to have it out for video games and gamers.
I think being exposed to violence and death regularly can make people that are mentally unstable be more likely to use violence. It numbs people to the value of human life.
Add in the internet where people with warped racist ideas that espouse the desire to get rid of certain groups and finds support for those warped ideas, and you have a recipe for violence.
Yeah we wish we were playing Pac Man, or I guess I should say they. Anyway, these games are far far different.
