I agree with most of your post except your last sentence. Why in the world would you single out Spanish for English speaking Americans to learn? Are you not aware of the number of other foreign languages spoken in this country besides Spanish? Most Spanish speaker here legally know English (even though they may have a distaste for speaking it) so we have our common language of English to communicate in.

And speaking about the Mayflower and the Jamestown settlers, they broke into the country, colonized it and were certainly more than a pest to the locals - infecting them with diseases and taking their lands. Ya think?
Same thing can be said and worse for the "Hispanics" in the Americas. And get off it. The only difference between the colonist then and immigrants today especially illegals is Americans are not allowed to resist them as the Indians did the colonist. That, and Americans and their ancestors built America from a wilderness state into a 1st world country with lost of things for immigrants to take from Americans besides just raw land.

Spanish is likely to be singled out more than other languages because Spanish is the second most popular language and defines a significant part of US culture today. Sure, there's other languages and it may change from region to region... there's no denying that. But among Americans, Spanish is by far the most spoken and American language behind English (culturally).

Better example is how european settlers invaded Mexico territory from Texas through California in the 1800's and blantantly broke Mexican laws.

People keep talking about heritage on this thread. Los Angelos, San Ftanciso, El Paso San Antonio. What heritage does that speak to?

Makes no difference to me. Spanish speakers should assimilate into our country linguistically just like any other ethnic group residing here. Hispanic culture is just a minority culture in this country just as other minority cultures are.

in answer to the bold:
Well, they were here first. Numbers don't matter - it's the principle. You'd scream bloody murder if a community of 10,000 Hondurans moved to a small largely Anglo town of 1500.
One standard applies to all.

in answer to blue: . So might makes right? And the ends justify the means in hindsight? Please, I've seen better justifications for colonialism coming from a 7th grader.

Oh come on. You know the answer already - you constantly single out Spanish speakers here and paint them with a broad brush as illegal immigrants. Go check your nativism and ethocentrism at the door, please.

If these ethnocentrics defending Hispanics in our country want to bring up the non-Hispanic European settlers of the past and any so-called killing and conquering they did they only need to look at their own Spanish Conquistador ancestors who conquered and boinked everything that moved all over the Western Hemisphere. Why do they think that the Amerindians were forced to learn Spanish and not English?

And very possibly in an accent from the Tri-State area...a fair number of Puerto Ricans hail from NY and NJ or go back and forth between there and the island.

"You got a problem with that?"

Excuse me, the principle? I and my ancestors were here first long before, 1-2 million illegals and 1 million legal immigrants came in this past year and every year. They are no better and worse than the colonist and invaders centuries ago when it was mostly open wilderness. I think I have a right to complain about immigration legal or illegal.
