Let's repeat that so it sinks in: California is the healthiest state in the US.

The ranking is from US News & World Report - the same entity so many conservatives liked to point out that California had the lowest quality of life.

The 10 Healthiest States
1. California
2. New York
3. New Jersey
4. Hawaii
5. Massachusetts
6. Connecticut
7. Minnesota
8. Colorado
9. Washington
10. Utah
When I look at that list, it occurs to me that these are the states where wealthy people cluster.

Oh, you see some mansions in Atlanta, and so forth. But by and large, even Republican wealthy people build their homes in Democratic areas.

Could be that they appreciate healthier places. Or?

Yes, that should be a warning sign that the methodology has issues which you can tell just by looking at it, but that's not the point of these articles. Heck, getting the rankings badly wrong just gets people more angry and generates more clicks.

In short, these types of ranking articles are generally so badly done that they're arguably trolling.

As previously mentioned, I think the main drivers to this are education\poverty.

Seattle is at the very high end in those categories.

You were actually doing well there, making a good analytical point....then politics triggered in your brain and your thesis just went to poo trying to drag R & D into the mix.

Not a lot of people pick where they work and live around the country based upon if the state tends to lean one direction or another. Some might, they're um...using a nice word here...outliers.

This is a good argument for liberals...however, every one of these states still has horrible obesity population so it's not like they have anything to brag about other than in comparison with lesser performing states. The red states so called, need to do much much better.

The obesity rates of those states are among the lowest as well.

Yes but my point is they still have very high obesity rates of 24% and up so Cali still has 10 million obese residents....no one should be obese. I agree that we here in Washington and the west coast in general have a healthier lifestyle than the South due to less fried foods, smaller portions, more vegetables, more exercising. The people at the gym I work out are incredibly fit, myself included.

The 2018 Point in Time headcount of homeless, mandated by HUD, determined an estimated 130,000 people in California might experience homelessness on any given day, out of a total population of nearly 40 million.
