Dress code would be hair no longer than the collar, trimmed fingernails, skirts no shorter than mid-thigh, blouses covering the abdomen, no t-shirts with band names, etc.
My kids had uniforms that were similar to the one being discussed. Just because they give color options doesn't mean it's not a uniform.
As a veteran, I'm going to agree to disagree about what constitutes a uniform. Sorry.
School is where kids learn subjects, but also social skills, being on time, being responsible for self control, studying at home, and following rules. This is their "job". And since this is the equivelant to "work" for adults, they should follow their "bosses" dress code.
Also school uniforms help make kids less likely to have gang symbols, risque clothing, end stigma of someone unable to buy 200. Sneakers or designer clothes, makes them more punctual by eliminating clothing decisions, makes them be dressed for success.
Those are the arguments that folks in favor of uniforms or standardized dress put forth, but there's no evidence that uniforms improve attendance or grades, or lessen gang activity.
There are studies that suggest it does make a difference....and just as many studies that say the opposite.
As far as "stigma" - clothing is not the only arbiter of wealth. Kids use phones, cars, shoes, gaming systems/devices and good old cash to differentiate between haves and have nots.
And for all the claims that uniforms put poor kids on an equal playing field, the very obvious disadvantage to poor families - they have to buy a separate wardrobe just for school - seems to be ignored.
And what are the long term consequences of taking decision making out of the hands of high school kids? College freshmen are arriving on campuses wholly unprepared - not just academically but emotionally. Teenagers whose schools have been telling them how to dress, what to study, when to eat, when they can use the bathroom - flounder when required to make choices for themselves.

Most of us have some sort of dress code in the work place. I'm not a fan of uniforms but some sort of dress code also teaches them that in the real world we have codes and policies we must abide by. Students can still make choices and express themselves within those dress codes.
Regardless, the way to challenge the status quo is not to defy the rule an aggressive and violent manner.

Might be because the police were not called for that. Read the article. Both father and daughter assaulted the School Resource Officer. The cops were called for that, not the dress code violation.
LOL, a teenage school girls kicks a resource officer and its time to call in back up?! Cmon, its not even a male student kicking the officer!
Honestly, Im happy to see when students and parents stand up and refuse to comply with DUMB rules, we are not all 'compliant subjects'.

You're certainly right that it never should have happened in the first place, because calling in the police to assault parents over a dress code violation is really stupid and shouldn't happen.
Were you there ? This was not simply some parent "objecting" to a school rule, and his daughter complying, it was an out of control pair who defied the order to leave the premises, so they got what they deserved.
This is 2019, not a time for any kind of bad scene at any school......you have read about the multiple school shootings, haven't you ? All they had to do was act like civilized, non confrontational human beings, and they could have walked out of there, not in handcuffs.
Looking at the picture of the dad, I am not surprised his daughter was acting the same way, he does not look like a member of the PTA. If people want to act like fools, there are consequences.
When my own sons were in school, there were times when my wife and I would go to the office to discuss something we felt needed corrected, but we met with them like adults, had a sane discussion, and never ended up leaving in the back seat of a patrol car. THAT is how reasonable people handle these things.
