Husband's coworker's 12 year old son was suspended from school for a year after he went around saying that he was going to shoot up the school. Other students reported him. This was right after Parkland and happened in a Florida Middle School.
Dad got a knock on the door from the police. Credible threat? Dad and Granny did not own guns or go shooting. Rest of the family lived in a different state. Where was this pre-teen boy going to get guns?
He was still suspended and had to be home schooled and get counseling. The boy said it was just a joke. Not something to joke about. I suppose the school wanted to make an example out of him that killing other students and teachers was no joke.

The boy in Colorado made no threats. The police found nothing wrong. The school idiots still suspended him.
...or most likely, just for going to a [gasp!] shooting range.
A snowflake took offense, and made an anonymous call to a "tip line," resulting in police showing up at the family's home. The police determined that there was no illegality, but the family subsequently received a call from the school that the teen was suspended, regardless of police findings, and that a "threat assessment" protocol would be put in place.
Ummm...yea. OK When my son was in school he posted lots of shooting pics. I can't recall him using the slang terms to caption them like this kid did but he used others. When we went to the ICORE regionals and internationals he had pics up of his guns and gear and others of him with the girl he was friends with from team SW and others with her , Julie Golob, Jerry Mickulek and Doug Keonig and him. All his heroes.
He never got in any trouble for them. The school and indeed the whole community was behind him in his shooting. Especially the PD and SO folks who knew him well from competitions they had been in with him or seen him do. A couple of the deputies used to swing by the range and watch him during our regular practice sessions.
If anyone did express any...concerns...they were not taken seriously. It truly is a shame that folks would be so paranoid about young people involved in shooting. It's a athletic endeavor just like football and such. Of course we were fortunate not to live in an area where firearms are stigmatized. And his shooting was plumb serious and quite organized. But still.....
There have been at least 40 arrests made since the last mass shootings. All for threatening more gun violence.
Since Colorado has already been the site of 2 mass shootings, the one in Aurora and the other at the Columbine High School, and there have been some others as well, the cops are jumpy right now.
Rightly so, if they stop another massacre. It's too bad that some innocent target shooters got caught up, but the threat level is now the highest it has been for decades.
If lives are saved, it's better than when they are lost to domestic terror. Better one small mistake with a single boy that does no real damage to him than a school full of dead boys and girls.

So to trample his rights is ok? Where do you draw the line?

I have a FB page about my town's history and present. I post pictures of the county shooting club (It is kid's only) all the time. I also post pictures of the 4H events, including shooting and pictures of the Boy Scout events, including shooting. I never get complaints or anyone saying they are afraid. There were 600
+ deer shot in the county during the youth season, by children as young as 6. Snowflakes need to crawl, back in bed and pull the covers over their head.
There has been ONE gun death in my county in the last TEN years. It was a homeowner shooting a druggie who broke in and attacked him in his home.
There are pictures of teens and younger kids with the deer they shot and their rifle on the front page of the newspaper during deer season.
