NOBODY should own a gun that they're not familiar, comfortable and proficient with.

Shotguns are no exception.

High stress situations begat mistakes and a simple mistake like forgetting to switch off the safety can be deadly.

There is no reason or excuse to think that training isn't necessary.

This.

Pretty much every gun design has been used for military purposes at one time or another.

In a hundred years, they'll be taking about banning laser rifles.

So, there should be what? A mandatory 40 hr training course with the firearm you are interested in before every purchase? If you get a break-in you shouldn't use the gun you bought yesterday?

Self defense via lethal means is obviously a very last resort option to begin with. Yes, you should know how to clear jams and disassemble/clean your firearm. But shotguns are recommended for home defense because of the relative rarity of jams, ease of use, and won't overpenetrate walls as much as a rifle/pistol and end up accidentally shooting a family member in the next room. Can load it with a birdshot warning and follow up with buckshot if you've got the crazed druggie. It's also a stereotype for a reason, but the click-clack sound of a pump action shotgun alone will send most running.

The rifle requires more training which your average person who has a single weapon for home defense likely doesn't do very often if at all.

Sorry, this is truly a Fudd statement from a gun owner who feels that the 2A is designed around the "right" to hunt.

To all the Fudds out there, once the Left, with your support, are able to seize and ban semi-automatic modern sporting arms, they're coming after your scoped and finely tuned bolt action rifles since who in their right mind needs one of those evil Sniper Rifles that the military uses in battle?

AND!!!! Once all you Fudds loose your "sniper rifle," they, the Left, will start working on taking away your duck hunting shotguns... Since who in their right mind needs one of those evil "Trench Guns" that the military uses in battle?

Fudds, do you seriously think the Left is going let you rest in peace with your M1 Garand rifle, M1 carbines, your Ruger Mini-14 or 10/22 rifles? Hell no!!

Also, you think after the Left wins these victories over Gun Rights, they're going to allow YOU to keep that evil 1911 style pistol that is a copy of a military handgun used by the military.... What about your S&W Model 10 "military and police" revolver? Even Fudds should see this one coming down the Pike.

So keep dreaming Fudds. They're Next on their hit list.

Btw, Fudds, there are far more owners of modern sporting arms today than people who own just bolt action rifles. So in other words, you better start defending your rights now while you can and stand with all the owners of modern sporting firearms... Without us, you're an easy target.

I'm not a big fan of the word "mandatory".

Just because you should do something, doesn't mean there needs to be a law requiring it.

Don't get me wrong.....I'm not arguing against shotguns suitability for home defense.......

Just saying that they're not for everyone.

It's not a "one size fits all" equation.

They should train often.

One of the things that came out of a CHL renewal course was to practice often. That if you don't, such as only shooting at renewal time and you end up in court and that information comes out, it might be used to show that you are reckless.............

..................and that would be a very bad character trait for you when you are on the defensive.

Carrying in public should have a higher standard than grabbing grandpa's old shotgun over the fireplace to defend yourself in a home invasion.

I don't care. You can't break our bond.

Having said that, I live in California where I'm lucky to be allowed to own a plastic spork so it doesn't really matter.

BAN all plastic sporks because 1. they're plastic and 2. people at KFC or anywhere else where they can get their hands on a spork without a background check and a spork is easily concealed. Furthermore even if a person applied for and received a concealed carry permit for a spork, you know that person is probably mentally ill and is already planning a mass killing with their spork. Sporks are so deadly that government should be the only ones allowed to posses them.

BAN ALL sporks! #BanSporks!

Some States purposely use training requirements to make it cost prohibitive for people to obtain a concealed carry permit. It is Unconstitutional and an infringement. Also, in many states you can legally Open Carry with no permit if you are not prohibited from owning guns. In some jurisdictions police will stop people that open carry to make sure they can legally due so. To avoid the hassle, people that can afford it get a CCW permit.

Most people that conceal carry voluntarily get the proper training, sometimes from friends and family if they can't afford to take a course.
