i don't get why he didn't just show one of the earlier prediction maps, like this one.
Because left wingers would attack him for something else, claim it was fake or deny that it was ever published. We're talking about the dumbest people in our society, we're talking about the same idiots who are still 100% convinced that the Russians colluded with the President, we aren't talking about people with enough common sense to fight their way out of a wet paper bag.
Why would any POTUS feel compelled to report impending weather, especially something as dynamic as a hurricane?
He likes to make it seem like he's with it and smart. Guess that didn't work this time ...

His real error was not keeping up with the forecast, and not consulting a map.

How is pointing out Trump's error a controversy? He just did something stupid. If no one can comment on when Trump does something stupid, there'd be nothing to talk about.
But you're not president. The president of the U.S. shouldn't behave this way. It's not normal.
First and foremost, he's a con man. His base will likely buy any semi-plausible explanations because they've already drunk the cool-aid. They want to believe. That's mostly what he wants as well: a strong base and a few swing states will win him the electoral college. He doesn't need to care about the rest. Normal isn't in his play book, he's gaming the system to win again.

kinda looks like directions for trump's comb-over.
