The tragedy I see is when innocent people get shot, especially children. I don't care about suicides as I think people have a right to shoot themselves if they want.
So...
I would require all handguns to be safely locked up in houses where children are.
I would limit all magazines to four or five shells for long guns.
That's it.
So if my house gets invaded, I have to go unlock my guns to protect my family? And hope the criminal is slow. Why not just get people to parent like mine did and teach gun safety?
Most "gun deaths of children" are gang killings. The CDC lists anyone up to age 25 as a child who gets shot to make it look worse.
We now have the most constricting gun laws we have ever had. .
Oh yeah? How about this?
1. Manage gun ownership like vehicles -- titles, annual registration, license, insurance, inspection.
2. Require gun owner membership in a citizen's militia certified and authorized by the state with psychological screening as a prerequisite.
3. No gun sales of any kind outside of government-run stores. No private sales or transfers outside of the controlled stores. Absolute background checks on all transfers and waiting periods.
4. No possession of "military", "assault", or "high capacity" weapons or magazines.
5. No open carry. Limited concealed carry only with authorization/license.
6. Gun possession with elevated/illegal blood alcohol content is a misdemeanor on first offense only. Second offense forfeits gun rights and mandatory jail time.
7. Suspended gun possession for domestic violence or assault charges.
8. A rational limit on the number of guns that can be owned. "Collectors" will make guns inoperable or comply with annual registration, etc. - and will be licensed.
9. Buy back requirements on estate transfers.
10. Private, self-manufacture of guns of any kind is a felony.
11. impose strict controls on ammunition sales and self-loaders.
12. Tough penalties/jail/prison for violators. No parole for armed criminal action.
Gun rights extremists keep pushing the envelope on what they can get away with to the point of absolute absurdity as we have seen. There are too many clowns with guns. When some idiot dresses up in assault gear and parades around in Walmart with an assault rifle to "test his gun rights" just days after a mass shooting we have fallen too far down the rabbit hole. If there isn't some rational and far-reaching gun controls put in place there will be draconian limits and laws. Time is running out. Rational and law abiding gun owners will pay the price for the antics and ridiculous claims of the gun nuts unless this is reined in and real controls put in place. Hunters and competition or target shooters will be painted with the same brush unless this is brought under real and rational control.

We are in the process of purchasing a pistol from a friend who is a gun dealer in another state, legally. He can get a way better price than the dealer/range down the street from us.
We have very close relative who is a gunsmith. He hears all kinds of things.
We have millions of guns in the hands of millions of good law abiding people but their Rights are being threatened by a few deranged nut job cowards that take out their frustrated anger on innocent people that cannot fight back.
We could ban all guns and the losers would turn to bombs, knives and trucks driven onto busy sidewalks. How long will it be before a murdering coward forces his way onto a bus load of little kids armed with a machete?
What we can do today is crack down on illegal guns and the people that use them.
The media is all over a mass shooting when it is carried out by a white guy that might have supported the NRA or Trump but they don't even mention the death tolls that come out of the inner cities every weekend like what happens in Chicago and Baltimore. Why don't they care about the young black men that are being gunned down like it is a hobby?
The problem is when it comes to legislating gun control it is only the law abiding that will follow the laws.
You can outlaw guns and only the outlaws will have them.
Focus on the ACTIONS of people, not the tool the choose to commit violent crimes. Don't plea down violent crimes to allow multiple, repeat Felons right back on the streets. Have mandatory LONG sentences for criminals that commit crime with guns and stop DA's from plea deals for this category of crime.
Pay attention to the signs people give for violent instability, but don't use "red flag laws" as a tool to circumvent due process as a tool people can use for vengeance. Prosecute people that falsely accuse others.
Today they can NOT do that.
Enforce the 22,000 existing GUN LAWS already on the books.
Encourage all Americans to join together and pledge to communicate with each other and work together to transform these horrific mass shootings and our everyday tragic gun violence into effective action. I would beg all folks to commit to each other to adopt a common goal of stopping this horror from being normal in the USA.
Demand legislators take action to combat gun violence. Ask them to enact a ban on sales of military-style assault rifles, as well as high-capacity magazines. Ask legislators to make background checks mandatory and universal and close those loopholes.
Help other Americans remove weapons of war from our streets as the purpose of these instruments is to kill as many people as possible, and they are not needed to hunt or protect oneself, as responsible gun owners understand. Get out the word to gun owners that those who advocate for and desire to have sensible gun reform are not trying to take all guns away from America's citizens. Foster the American spirit of compromise regarding solutions to our sorrowful epidemic as this highly charged issue is not partisan nor should it be.
Convene a comprehensive study or panel on gun violence, one which includes a wide array of scientific expertise including those from medicine, law enforcement, the CDC etc.
Demand legislators free themselves from the gun lobby.
Look for more solutions and consider those that may come from others, despite their political persuasion because, once again, we all know this American terror is not a partisan issue.
Support leaders who speak to the better angels of our nature and seek to unite America rather than divide it.
All violent felons are incarcerated for life, no parole.
All guilty of murder receive the death penalty.
Everyone else as a free citizen enjoys their 2nd amendment rights as written, with no restrictions up to and including any weapons that can or could be used by a single soldier during the course of war.

Nice except for one little item............we don't trust the government.
Now, if we did, them maybe it could work.

* I would outlaw all clip and magazine fed semiautomatic weapons. Not to be sold to the public under any circumstances ever again.
* Institute a buy-back program for the guns that are out there. But no penalty for owning the ones that you have.
* Constitutional carry should be a reality in all states. If you want to carry a gun, you may. A revolver that cannot be quickly reloaded will do nicely.
Adam Lanza (Sandy Hook) fired about 150 rounds and killed 26 people in a matter of minutes. He used weapons that were legally purchased, although not by him. If I were "in charge" those magazine fed and clip fed guns would never be sold in stores or shows again.
You know the cops interviewed him, he posted thoughts online, many warned about him. Before the 2nd amendment ever came into play, the 4th, 5th and 6th amendments allowed him to remain free to murder however he saw fit.
It could have been nipped before he ever got a gun, what do you say about that? You are so ready to blame and trash the 2nd, how about the rest?
