Once worked for a ex military “ guy” who typically addressed groups as “ girls” as in “ hey girls” , “ now girls”,
“you go girl”, etc. it was a delightful personality quirk. This was decades ago.
The males would typically infer that “ girl” implied weakness.
He also never used first names. I suspect he did not know or care.
LOL, we have a temp at work who does that, too. I don't care, but it does rub a few people the wrong way, especially because he is one of the only men in the department, so I'm trying to covertly modify that (in hopes that he'll get hired on permanently). When he says something like "The girl" or "You girls", I feign confusion and say something like "What 'girl'? We don't hire children here." He is gradually getting the hint.
As for "you guys", I don't think it's intended to be offensive or exclusionary, but in some settings it can be perceived that way. It's not so much about political correctness, but about manners and knowing your audience.

I don't *personally* find the term sexist. But the response that we get nearly universally to the notion that male privilege extending to the basics of language being Poo Pooed. Look. Men have held such massive privilege. And the worst men are the ones whose attitude is NO NO NOT ME. Vs hey I wonder what this might be about?
