Im not the one who is the luddite here, It is 2019, you think there might be better ways to deliver knowledge to young minds other than the Prussian model of school as obedience academy?
Personally I want education to thrive and take on different formats, some yet to be created. Do you see that happening with entrenched school administrators, teachers and their unions? Think they'll voluntarily give up their pensions, tenure, holidays, summers, and guaranteed paychecks thanks to every property owner in their district?
But I get it, your ilk doesn't want freedom of choice (except who they sleep with), it wants schools turning out obedient compliant house slaves who vote, pay taxes and worship the state.

"Free market" education gave us the disastrous for-profit colleges that soaked the government for student aid and/or left the student deep in debt, while handing out worthless degrees and making false promises of jobs after graduation. And of course "free market" education gave us Trump University, which was outright fraud.

Privatizing everything is not a solution to every problem.

Basically, I think this survey is not very valid because I sense that the OP is trying to get to a deeper, unexplained question. The fact is that most children grow up in a family, and most families have some limits on their resources. I think prospective college students should have the right to pick what college they want to attend, within the restraints of family resources. That may include the family's ability to travel to other states. In addition, parents are, I think, wise to have some input. An example: I know of a family that did not have the resources to send both of their children to 4 years of college. But they made an agreement that if the kids would attend community college, at home, for two years, the parents would pay for the last 2 years at the college or university of their choice. It seemed to work, and kept the college costs and debt incurred under control.

What kind of a lunatic question is this? Doesn't merit a real response.

If the kid has the money, education, and other resources to do so, sure. For example, if an 18-year-old has 6-figures in assets and the necessary resources to go to Harvard, let them do it! Other than that, it's on the parents.

If I asked my 7 year old son which school he would like to go to he would answer "which school gives the least amount of homework".....
