I realize people say and do stupid things these days, even teachers, but for some reason I find this story a bit hard to believe.

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/midd...005752558.html

Quote:
A Long Island middle school teacher is currently under investigation after allegedly assigning students to come up with captions under pictures of slavery and to "write something funny."

According to a woman whose granddaughter attends John W. Dodd Middle School in Freeport, N.Y., students were instructed to write the captions underneath black-and-white photos of enslaved people in cotton fields and to make them “funny,” as the teacher allegedly didn't want to be bored.

I cannot think of a single excuse for that kind of assignment from a teacher unless it was some kind of dementia or some other mental disorder or disease. (Not that that would make it acceptable, but at least it would be a reason.)

Or maybe it didn't really happen, although that was not the first thing that came to my mind, and I don't think that is the case.

Why does this story sound so familiar? Didn't another teacher do this a few months ago?

There has to be more to this story. it does NOT add up.

Firstly, the picture appears post civil war.

Just a guess.

I'm guessing the teacher didn't create this lesson, but rather, distributed it and is too brain-dead to really look at the pics, and think of what the captions should be.

All she's thinking about is here's this thing I have to grade, entertain me.

Without really considering the content.

Or anyway, to think otherwise would make her evil, and not just stupid.

..maybe her brother-in-law is an agent, was trolling for some new talent???...

...a lot of 'funny' comedians came from long island...Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern, Opie & Anthony, Rosie O'Donnell, Eddie Murphy, Andy Kaufman, Kevin James, Billy Crystal, Rodney Dangerfield...the list goes on...not to mention Bob Keeshan(Captain Kangaroo) as well....

Middle school, so 7th- 8th graders I'm guessing. Did these kids not object or discuss the assignment with the teacher. I think they are old enough to form an opinion. As well when mine was in middle school I was pretty privy to his assignments. I actually had to sign his assignment folder each week. It strikes me odd that a kid not in her class showed it to grandma who posted it on FB. Why not go to the teacher. Thats what I would do if I saw it in my kids assignment.

Even though slavery was legally condemned/abolished in 1865, it still continued for many more decades in certain areas!
