That's a rather simplistic view of rape, IMO, and doesn't touch on the many different rape scenarios that arise. Even to the extent that rape is about power, it is about a very specific kind of power and control: sexual power and control. So.
Are men who do certain jobs more prone to be rapist for some reason?
Native American women are known to experience high rates of violence against them in various ways. This info connects their sexual violence to the men working on oil pipelines and other similar jobs. Do these jobs attract bad men?
In the cases that are occurring on Native American reservations as your article highlights involving non native men, I think it has a lot to do with the fact they aren’t being held accountable. The men know that the tribal police have no authority over them and the likelihood that the feds will get involved is slim to none. It’s a horrible crime of opportunity.
This oil worker’s comments about the mean camps don’t paint a very pretty picture.
Quote:
Chris Martinez, an oil worker in Williston, blamed the lack of background checks for the culture of racism demonstrated during production peaks in the Bakken formation. As oil prices go up, companies need more and more workers, and “that’s when you’re going to bring in quantity over quality,” he said.
“Those man camps are indescribable, the stuff that happens, there are shootings, stabbings, rapes, fights, extreme amounts of drugs, alcohol. When you work 12 to 16 hours a day and you’re away from your family, and you have all this money, and you go home, that’s when they start making those decisions and it’s bad, it’s really bad.”
