(CNN) — A Dallas resident who fatally shot a backyard intruder and then went back to bed has been charged with murder, according to police.

The homeowner, James Michael Meyer, said he didn't know whether he struck the person, so he went back to bed and didn't call police, according to an arrest warrant released by the Dallas Police Department.

Meyer, 72, says that he was awakened around 5 a.m. Thursday by a noise outside, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed by Dallas police. Meyer told police he looked outside and saw someone attempting to break into his storage shed, and that's when he got his handgun and went outside to confront the person.

Thoughts?

Honestly, I laughed when I read the title. But I suppose the problem came in with how he handled the situation. Still I feel a bit bad for the old man...

Yea because it seems like the intruder was close enough that he should have known he hit him. But still...

Sounds like he deserves a cold beer and a nobel peace prize for his exemplary service. After all, they gave Obama one prior to killing all those civilians in the middle east. At least this citizen managed to remove filth from the streets of America.

It’s too bad. I don’t like seeing older people go to prison, especially for things like this.

In war, it doesn't matter so much how you win. What matters is that you win. We won WW2 by nuking a bunch of otherwise innocent civilians. This 72 year old man was placed in similar circumstances, and did what he had to do to win. At his age, I'm not sure how or why anyone would fault him.

Doesn't mean he will either.

Agree. He did everything right, until he didn't call 911. That was pure stupidity.

I mean, if he didn’t know the guy was dead, how did he know he wouldn’t come back and kill him and his wife in their sleep. How do you just go back to sleep without reporting the attempted crime?

Murder charge is excessive since the shooting was justified, maybe man-slaughter would be more apt.
If the intruder had a lengthy rap sheet, then the old guy should get off with a couple days of community service.
