And how are they supposed to buy into Medicare if they aren't living here yet? They don't get their visa until the last minute. They can't apply from wherever they live, whether it's Italy or Poland or Ireland or wherever. And once they are allowed in, he gives them 30 days. "It's stupid because they already have a sponsor so there is no need for all this extra paperwork."

What is stupid is believing sponsors HAVE to provide health care insurance.

"The CMS on Friday told states on Friday they can count the assets and income of the sponsors of legal immigrants when they're determining whether the immigrants qualify for Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance coverage."

"This could put family members who sponsor relatives, or any group that sponsors legal immigrants, on the hook for all their medical bills."

Meaning they a re NOT "on the hook NOW"

Which is another issue this idea won't affect.

Don't know if this is from the same statement but...

From this link https://www.modernhealthcare.com/med...id-eligibility

Quote:
This particular guidance refers to the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, and follows a May memo from President Donald Trump that specifically addressed enforcing "legal responsibilities of sponsors of aliens" for healthcare coverage decisions. In that memo, the president directed HHS to "take steps necessary to ensure compliance with requirements" of federal statute including the Immigration and Nationality Act.
So on August 23rd at least the law was that sponsors were responsible for the living costs associated with the sponsored. Unless you can point to a law change since then, it's not law that they need not pay, it may not be enforced, but that's a different issue.

Good. They should also help pay for mine also.

Isn't this the way Canada does it also?

First, there is nothing necessarily wrong with requiring health insurance as other countries, such as Russia, require proof of health insurance coverage before they allow you to enter the country.

Second, countries like Russia that do require proof of health insurance, generally require a Visa.

Perhaps this is the first step to expanding Visa requirements. If so, this could be devastating to the US economy.

Immigration laws were originally conceived, among other things, not to burden the American taxpayer.

So that's where Trump got the idea! I knew he couldn't have come up with it on his own.

Good! Why should American citizens pay for their healthcare? Let their own country pay for them.

Yes, and Canada has VERY STICT immigration policies. They know they can't afford to pay for everyone's healthcare. Evidently, the Progressives (Democrats) here don't care, and just want more Dem voters paid for by US!
