But America has the weakest public safety net in the developed world. And one of the lowest labor force participation rates.

And keep in mind, most developed countries have a far higher share of baby boomers than America. We're at the tail end of the business cycle so naturally, LFPR would flatline, but its still nowhere near levels in most developed countries and havent been for a long time.
Interesting. Your sources completely contradict mine. Mine include everyone over 16. Yours cuts off at age 65, so a 65 year old who still works doesn't count. So I guess that older Americans are a lot more likely to keep working than anyone else in the world? Yes there are countries with significantly higher or lower LFPR's than the USA.

And you haven't really addressed the question of methodology. Is the same methodology being used from one country to the next or is the oecd just taking the stats gathered by each country?

So do you think politicians should jail people handing out free money to beggars?
Some of the destitute already resort to stealing but ban charity and it will get worse.

Some call it extortion, but as another poster pointed out, we live in a society of survival of the fittest and man made laws keep it in check. It is in most peoples benefit to obey the laws.

When those laws no longer are beneficial to everyone, then some are going to make their own laws.

There was a case recently of an old senior holding up a bank for one dollar so he could get medical care in jail.

A socialist country has better medical care than you would get in jail where most will not haul you off unless you are unresponsive and foaming at the mouth.

They would receive the same treatment that any uninsured American would receive IN THE ER.

America had the strongest safety net when the interests of Big Business and the citizens well being was combined.
When the USA went global, the banking and business sector no longer saw a monetary incentive in supporting the best welfare of the country.

Other developed countries don't have all or nothing benefits the way the US does.

If you work for a living in the US, even for meager wages, you get none of the generous welfare benefits that are piled onto those that don't work or work under the table and claim no income.

Our system creates its own failure and abuse because we punish people for working.

Why do so many dont feel they should work or try to find a job?
There is a segment of the population that is happy to live off welfare provided by their working neighbors. Take that away and you would see even higher employment.

Not true, if you are homeless or poor, you may go to the ER, but you get no preventive care.
If you have a terminal illness, you are SOL.

Welfare is at the lowest levels it has been for years.
Each Administration has cut it regardless of party in power.

A group of people recently went around the nation to see what they could get for free that claimed they were homeless and all were denied any assistance because they were all single males and females.

Free housing is a myth, you need to have kids and put on a wait list for years.
