Everything I'm seeing is that the NBA, Adam Silver, and LeBron are getting reamed over this controversy.
PR gurus will be studying this for years to come. If Morey's tweet about China had just been ignored, few would have even heard about it.
But somebody in China made a stink, and then Silver and LeBron had to add to the stink. Backfire, big time. They look like first-class cads now. They better hope they can suck more money out of China, because the US fan base is ticked.
And over at the NHL, their people are being urged to choose words carefully. They do not need any Daryl Morey, nor Lebron James like comments.
Bettman was asked if it was a good idea to continue expanding in China, given the fragile relationship with the U.S. right now. Selecting his words carefully, the commissioner responded: “When you’re dealing in foreign countries, geopolitical issues can impact your business, and you have to be mindful of that.
The perception that Silver or anyone in the NBA pandered to the Chinese is not supported by the reaction to their comments in China, however, just here in America. Go figure.
Well, the Chinese reaction is rooted in the tweet; the Chinese gov't cancelled televising of an NBA pre-season game in China.
The reaction in the U.S. is rooted in the otherwise progressive members of the NBA not supporting free speech as exercised by Morey.
So it comes down, with the NBA, some issues or OK for free speech, others are not OK for free speech.
LeBron, Kerr, and others are actually stating they don't know what China's all about yet all are there doing big $$$ business.
These alleged supporters of freedom and free speech sure know how to clam-up when $ is on the line.
The NBA has no problem being a part of the ''boycott, divest, and sanction Israel'' movement but has no problem dealing with exploiting, investing, and supporting China? LeBron can tweet about making all ''that Jewish money''? Israel is a small NBA market though.
I think the folks in the U.S. are tired of the hypocrisy of all of this.
Love to see some fans out there with the courage to stand up for what is right. Something the NBA can never be trusted to do. The NBA is a money worshiping organization, nothing more. They exist to make money, and will support pure evil if it means making a buck. Shame on them all for being COWARDS. They do not not deserve the privilege of playing their silly game in the USA. Hope they all move to Communist China, where they belong.
It's a damn shame that we have sports figures who basically spit on our nation, it's flag, it's freedom and national anthem. Yet when told to support an oppressive communist regime, they do exactly as they are told like good little pawns. Either they are stupid, they worship money over all else, or they simply hate American and love China/communism.
Perhaps the NBA should now stand for Nothing But Anti-Americans
So is every sports league and private, for-profit organization. Duh!
Corporations sometimes cross the line, and must be put in their place. We have many regulations in place to do just that. Perhaps it is time that the NBA is made an example of, for the rest of the spineless cowards who think it's smart to suck up to the commies. Hopefully the fans will take it upon themselves to send a message that the NBA's anti American behavior is not acceptable, and will not be tolerated.
If the NBA should be punished for wanting to do business in China, then EVERY US-based big company should be punished for wanting to do business in China. Let's compile a list, shall we?
Apple
GM
Ford
Microsoft
Intel
Proctor-Gamble
... and so on. There are easily thousands and thousands of US-based companies wanting to do business in China.
The NBA is willing to say free speech is too dangerous to appease the Chinese Communist Government purely for profit. I have nothing against profit, but what kind of message doe that send to kids that follow these criminals? Oh, wait, younger people think it is OK to limit free speech. Hate speech and all. Never mind.
So is every sports league and private, for-profit organization. Duh!
I chuckled at that, too.
