Shoplifting is the primary cause of grocery store shrink.

Shoplifting overtook employee theft in non- grocery retail stores more than a decade ago.

Kroger chose to put its most vulnerable inventory behind a cage with highly controlled exits to better manage inventory and reduce shrinkage.

I have seen similar “ cages” at some Walmarts, in Florida. I have also noticed that Some grocers that sell beer, wine and sometimes spirits, often do so in a well secured areas with separate check outs.

Yep. All Drug Stores, Dollar Generals, Wal Mart near a low socio-economic area all have cages or plastic devices blocking items. Good thing is they don't discriminate based on race, weather your in a poor white area or a poor black area, they lock stuff up because you are criminals, all of you

But it is not insignificant. My belief is that both employee stealing and shoplifting is going on. Don't forget that both employees and shoplifters come from the same area.

In our co-ops and farm stores they put expensive flea and tick meds and horse wormer in a locked glass cabinet so you have to go get an employee to unlock it and carry your merchandise to the check out. I assume it is because those are items that are commonly nicked. Never thought it was racism towards white farmers.

It's probably going out the back door as well as the front.

All businesses have financial challenges from time to time in some markets. It’s those businesses that do not take corrective actions, that tend to fall into receivership.

Self checkouts used to be increasingly common in grocery stores. Why pay 7 cashiers and baggers when one cashier at a control station will do?

Mr has a challenge at station #3 ,diverting the sole cashier’s attention. Mrs is at station #6 scanning only half of her cart before departing. Oops. Forgot to ring up the diapers, baby formula and Tide

Most grocers have eliminated self checkout “ to improve the customer experience” aka reduce shrinkage.

Wonder how self check out will work out for Home Depot.

Yep. Anyone who's ever worked in retail of any type knows that's true.

I live in a rather high income area of Miami, Brickell, and they lock certain items up in stores here. When I lived in lily white Arlington, VA, same thing, retail stores would lock certain items up.

Already been discussed. While employee theft does happen, the majority is done by customers.

That's the mentality of a people who think the world owes them something. (If that's not you great, but don't be acting like it ain't the truth generally speaking.)
