Assuming the OP is not being facetious, this is not against Italians. It is against celebrating anything to do with white America - in this case its discovery by a white European. It's just a way for liberals to downplay Columbus' contribution to this country.

I am certain that if the country had been discovered by a black man or a Muslim, or better yet, a GAY black man or Muslim, or....even better, a gay female Muslim, they would close the public schools and have parades. It's all about identity politics, and white Europeans are "out" and worthy of being ignored, and blacks, Muslims, and gays are "in" and worthy of celebration.
