When i was in my 20's i brought my first Porsche a 924S. The second cheapest one ever made, i loved that car but for the first time since i had started driving almost ten years earlier I had my car keyed. I had people pull up next to me and yell and even once had some guy early morning chase me in his truck wanting to fight.
My driving hadn't changed I was always a pretty mild driver but somehow driving what was perceived to be a pricey sports car seemed to tick some people off. Like they felt you were waving your elite status in their faces. BTW i paid less then 3k for that car since it was 10 years old but just the name Porsche on it seemed to yank some peoples chain. Despite the actual cost of the vehicle.
1. Tesla is relatively new. And its disruptive. It outperforms the established competition based on some key metrics, namely, acceleration. yet it does it with the energy efficiency of a Prius. Whenever something is new and touted by some as the new standard bearer, those who are comfortable with the status quo end up challenging the newcomer. Seeing a Model X family wagon beat a porsche or a mustang or a camaro on the drag strip is something we aren't accustomed to but we are forced to accept this new reality.
2. Jealousy - When the Model S and X came out, Tesla was reserved only for the rich. So the critics said Tesla could never make a car for the masses. Then the Model 3 came out. The three hardest words for anyone to say are "I Was Wrong". It hurts the ego.
3. Some obnoxious owners - yes, there are bad apples with every brand loyalist group. But I've seen plenty of obnoxious drivers of (insert make here).
4. Financial - Tesla is publicly traded, and some are long, while others are short on the stock. Whenever money is on the line, it brings out the worst in people. This is where we have to be very careful and not believe everything we read online. book an appointment and test drive the car. Draw your own conclusions and take it from there. The internet is all noise.
My theory is this. Tesla vehicles are viewed the same way the Prius is viewed. It's seen as the vehicle of the "liberal elite", the preferred vehicles of environmentalists.

And 'worse', it is subsidized by the federal gov't. A distinct no-no on the free market/right side.
I don’t like most Teslas, but not because they are electric. I just don’t find them to be very sexy. That is, with the exception of the roadster. When I am ready to buy a sports car as a second car, I might consider it as one of the options.
But we all have different priorities, and that is the way it should be. My car gets 11 or 12 mpg, and I dont see that as a positive, but I love my car in spite of the gas mileage. To me it is worth it.
That said, anyone that intentionally damages someone else’s car is the scum of the earth in my book.
A friend of ours bought a Tessla and he kept asking us over and over again if we wanted to test drive it. It was weird. And he kept writing about his Tessla on FB like it was a child. lol. So..idk..they are kind of special some of them.
