Bed Bath & Beyond has removed black jack-o’-lanterns from sale after a News 12 investigation that stemmed from complaints in Nyack about the product.
A Halloween display in front of a law firm was taken down in Nyack because the jack-o'-lanterns upset some community members. The jack-o’-lanterns are painted black with a white mouth.
The reaction from some community members led the Feerick, Nugent, MacCartney Law Offices to take the pumpkins down less than 48 hours after setting them out on the porch.
“We understand that someone complained about them and so once we got word of that we immediately took them down," says Mary Marzolla, a partner at the law firm.
Marzolla says the pumpkins, personalized with the names of each partner at the firm on South Broadway, were never meant to offend anyone.
Lots of black jack o lanterns for sale all over the USA without any controversy. It's the white lips painted on...and yes it looks like black face.
Over sensitive -- sure -- but you know what......all kinds of products have been ditched before they hit the market for even more ridiculous overly sensitive issues.

Bad marketing decision.
Agreed, I’m not sensitive to this stuff but these Jack-o-lanterns are just completely tone deaf and stupid looking.
Companies make marketing mistakes and rescind them all. the. time. Don't worry about it. This is just the regular course of business.
Pulling a black jack-0-lantern from the stores because it's racist is not "the regular course of business". That excuse is part of the same lunacy that led to it in the first place.

Absolutely it is. I'm in marketing and public perception (and also what someone thinks public perception might be) changes campaigns and product availability all the time. Nobody wants to get boycotted (well, except for when they make the business decision to seek/encourage a boycott, but that's not relevant here). Stores pull items every day because someone might be offended. And it doesn't necessarily have to do with one side of the political spectrum, either. Nor is it always publicized. Most of the time, it probably isn't.
