It's because black people are too dumb to have an ID or get whatever free ID can be offered in its place. At least that's what Democrats claim, really makes no sense. Also, its racist to stop dead people from voting.
I think most people would be on board with voter ID if places that did ID had better hours and the process was made less difficult. Most DMVs have horrible hours for example and some states close many branches.
In Canada we have a non-partisan office, called Elections Canada. What this means that in federal elections, no matter where you live in the country, that all procedures and ballots are the same. Anyone who is on the voters list get a vote ID card in the mail, a few weeks before the election. If you don't get one, you can contact their office and check to see if you are on the voter's list. It's a good way for people to know.
However you do NOT need a voter's ID card to vote, and you don't even need ID as long as you have a registered voter to vouch for you. Here is link that spells it out.
It is very easy to vote here. There are always advanced polls, this year it was over four days. Polling stations are plentiful, and if you are unable to get to an advanced poll, by law, employers who have people working on election day, and that worker doesn't have a four hour time frame to go vote, they get that time off with pay, to go vote.
I should add, that even with voter ID options, there is no where in the rules that state you must show proof that you are eligible to vote...meaning a Canadian citizen.
So far, this has not been a huge issue, but the way elections seem to being more interfered with, this could change I suppose.
1 piece of id if it is a driver's license or other id issued by a canadian government which has your name, address and photo
or
2 pieces of other things too numerous to mention that could include combinations like your passport and a bank statement, your library card and a personal cheque or a pill bottle with your name on the label and a utility bill. You can even use a letter of confirmation of residence from a shelter or soup kitchen as one of these pieces of id.
or
you declare your identity and address in writing and have someone who knows you and is assigned to your polling station vouch for you. The individual vouching for you must be able to prove their identity and address by one of the above methods.
Most people can accomplish one of these methods.
