Legal marijuana in California as a business was supposed to be a no-brainer. How could it not be profitable in a liberal state pushing 40 million residents where some of the best weed in the world has been grown for decades? But nearly three years after Proposition 64, the law legalizing the adult use of the drug, was passed, California cannabis producers are not seeing the windfalls predicted. They tell Sharyn Alfonsi that regulations and a robust black market are cutting into legal pot profits.
You emphasized "robust black market" but not the "regulations" part .
The oppressive regulations are the direct cause of the robust black market. I am all about weed being legal, not so much about the over regulation and oppressive taxation tied to it in California.
There was a short lived reality show about the first and largest dispensary in Oakland, called "Weed Wars". I watched it. Taxes nearly put them out of business. Taxes. It definately throttled them back extensively, forcing them to raise their prices to very high levels. Cheaper to buy weed on the corner, no?
Another problem is the pricing, anyone idiot knows that drugs bought on the street/black market are expensive ONLY because of the risk involved, strictly as a product, marijuana should be VERY cheap, its easy to grow just about anywhere and it produces alot of flowering buds, why they tried to keep the price so high on legal weed is the question.

So have you given up on calling the industry a failure just because they haven't turned a profit in the first 5 years?

Sounds like CA needs more dispensaries and with 80% of the towns not allowing shops that's a problem.
Most commercial cannabis is too strong for a very large segment of users, and dispensaries aren’t that widespread, so they buy mid-grade from members of their community.
There is no basis for this assertion. Stop making things up. It's not about strength, it's about the money, like everything else in the US. Illegal is so much cheaper, because of the high taxes on legal product, that people don't see enough reason to switch to legal.
If the commercial weed is too strong, you just use less, and your stash lasts longer. Win-Win. You obviously no nothing about which you are voicing your opinion.
It took Amazon almost 7 years to become profitable, Zappos 8 years, Facebook 5 years, Twitter 11 years, Tesla 14 years.
Uber and Square are still working on it and they have been around ~10 years.
