I have empathy for the parents and I have been there. I would definitely be willing to help a struggling parent by holding a baby.

Personally when I travel I know it is a possibility that I will have to deal with screaming babies. It's called part of travelling. You know it may happen. I don't know anyone that enjoys the experience. However it is what it is. If you don't like it pay for 1st class or drive!

Sounds like you've never sat next to a screaming baby or loud children on a flight for a few hours.

Get the Bose QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones the second model is out now those are far better then any cheap ones it will be silent. They aren't cheap about $350.00 if you fly a lot well worth the money.

This doesn't stop kids from kicking the seat back not often this happens I had it happen to me I got up waved to the mother she had headphones on too was playing with her phone. When I got her attention she looked at me rolled her eyes when I told her what her kid was doing. She told him to stop which he did for about 30 seconds until she put those head phones back on.

I called the flight attendant she found me another open seat a few rows away.

Adults can be a PITA also had a guy next to me who was sick red in the face with a fever sneezing and stuff. For this I pull out the mask like you see in Japan people wearing masks and I put on safety glasses with foam seals. I have a medical condition with my lung getting sick is a 10 day off work event.

I have found when I used to business travel I don't go with the cheapest airline generally I find lower cost more problems with the people who are on the plane.

When I was a kid growing up no one I knew took kids on planes younger then like 6-7 years old people just respected others back then lot more selfish attitudes now days.

Airlines are public transportation. Public means public. Babies scream, but so do adults. Little kids misbehave, but so do adults. Babies are still human, so putting up with them won't ever change to your satisfaction without causing even bigger problems for yourself.

If you want to fly in perfect comfort with none of the public's problems, buy and airplane or rent one. Or take the easy way out and buy a set of cheap foam earplugs.

Or better yet, offer to take the baby for a little bit and give the suffering Mom a break. That won't make you any more miserable than you already are, and it might help.

I hate screaming babies too. A lot. That's part of the reason I never fly.
Unintended I'm sure, but I think you're on to something (re: the bold)
Flying is no different than getting on an Amtrak, Metra train, public bus etc. Airlines have become a zombie business, private in name only.
The supposed privately run airline, operating out of govt owned airports that are staffed with govt employees and security, is so busy in first meeting the myriad of govt rules and regs. that the needs of Jane and John Q Public flyer are hardly on the radar at all. Think of the flying experience as the post office with wings.

If airlines were truly private with competive forces at work, you might see roomier planes with soundproof childrens sections ( think mcdonalds play-land) or the reverse, quiet zones, or maybe something not yet thought of.

I don't blame the child-babies do that. I blame the parents for being so selfish as to subject all the other travelers to this. There are few reasons to ever do air travel with a very young one, too young to be able to understand things like "inside voice". A disease that requires specialized treatment at a distant hospital comes to mind. Perhaps a dying grandparent that only gets this one opportunity to see their grand child. But beyond that??? How selfish do you have to be to do this? And how little do you care about your child to subject them to this (obviously the child wasn't enjoying the trip).

Yes, I know, not political. But I expect controversy.
You're a Trump supporter aren't you? Ever heard of headphones? Besides, maybe the parent had a funeral to go to.

I had to fly for work recently and as I got boarded I look over and see the telltale fuzzy heads of two twin babies, both were about a year and a half or so, I thought god no, lord this is going to be an awful flight. Got lucky though, they slept and didn't hardly fuss much.

The lady behind me, she wouldn't shut her yap the whole trip. Talk talk talk and more talk.

I think sometimes people have to travel with babies, I'm sure it's no fun for the parents either.

Heh the dreaded loud talker, it starts at the gate and by the time you're collecting your bags you know all their kids names, where they live, what they do, how great a life they have, in other words a verbalized version of their facebook feed. BORING.

If I have to listen then I want the real; abortions, bankruptcies, infidelities, divorces, tax liens, S&M parties, the plastic surgery gone wrong...

You must LOVE the Christmas letters people send, crowing about Johnny becoming a brain surgeon, Trish being promoted to VP at a Fortune 25 and the senders saying they're retiring at 50 and looking for a summer home on the lake as well as a ski chalet in Aspen.

People who are close to them already know what's going on - and those who don't know aren't close enough to care.

I hate both the loud talker and the guy who falls asleep and snores, sounding like a delta force muffler.
