Lower performing kids need to be left to "self learning". That sounds like a winner. Not.

But the Democrats don’t care. They just want the votes.
I went to a PTA meeting in 5th grade where parents that were lawyers and doctors (white people) where complaining about Math homework and that they couldn't help their own children because they had no math skills.

I was blown away that these 30/40 yr old successful people couldn't help their child reduce a fraction.

There are studies in India where poor kids were left a computer and given math problems, haven't even seen one before.

They taught themselves english just to then figure out how to solve problems.

This is very disturbing trend that of course goes back over 50 years. As the article discusses, there is a big divide between the trends for lower performing students and higher performing students, with lower performing students trending downwards, further and faster.

What on Earth? At a time when having critical skills has never been more important, people are becoming less capable of obtaining those skills. This is a national disaster.

Maybe if we just flood our borders with unskilled non-English speakers in tsunami type fashion, perhaps that will help. {Sarcasm}
While not very PC to say, at least one study showed that if you remove black/brown children from the statistics, America is not as far behind other nations school systems.
I have no idea of those are valid studies or not, and what criteria was used. However just the fact they attempted to study the problem from a non-PC type of study is refreshing.
If our minority children are falling behind (thus holding all kids back), we need to find innovative ways to address the problem.
We cannot just forget them because they are our citizens, and need to be productive members of our society, rather than drains upon it.

changes in the racial makeup of the 600,000 students who took the test don't explain the declines in performance, which she said were seen across most subgroups. The results also show that nationally, there has been relatively no change in the score gap between white and black students and between white and Hispanic students in math at 4th or 8th grade.

What a bunch of B.S.

The melanin content of these kids skin is not relevant to their learning ability. If you want to talk about differences in culture, fine. But I am confident that you will find that people of any skin tone will have similar problems within these particular cultural contexts.

Everything is not all about "race". Except in the minds of racists. And of course those people are positively obsessed with the topic.

Before leftists claim we don’t spend enough on education... the US has one of the highest per pupil spending rates in the world. Higher than Germany, UK, Canada, Finland, South Korea with FAR worse results. The one thing we do spend a lot of money on(besides defense) is education.

Our young socialists don't need math and reading----they have slogans and threats to propel them ahead.

If you remove impoverished children..... Poverty and all it implies is the real problem. Make all those black/brown (and yes, white) children part of affluent upper middle class families and watch their scores soar. So if you don't want to forget them then you figure a way to greatly improve their economic status. Good luck with that in this country.

You know what they say: lawyers are smart people who can't do math. Smart people who can do math are engineers.
