Or maybe because (for better or worse) "racial" identity and concerns take precedence over other concerns for many "minorities."

I don't think you have to pander to any constituency for the vote- but if you insult or deride them, you will not get support. At the current moment, Rs are doing as well minorities as Hillary did among coal miners...

How are conversatives and/or Trump insulting or deriding minorities?

It's the democrats deriding the majority and that seems to appeal to the minority. Why should a majority member vote for democrats who deride whites and want to give all our resources and opportunity away to people of foreign origin?

You’re not likely to gain large numbers of minorities to the Republican Party while simultaneously being increasingly the white grievance party

I have some links that can confirm some of what you mean.

Tom Worthan and his bigoted remarks about Blacks holding office.

Roy Moore claimed that he wants to get rid of every amendment after the 10th. Oh, those amendments include stuff that addressed abolishing slavery allowing Blacks and women to vote.

They could just go back to their roots, drop the regressive social policies and just be about limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual rights, personal responsibility... A lot of people, including many liberals, would not object to those things. The regressive social stuff is a killer for minorities and most people under 50.

You're right then they resort to the label of xenophobia merely for wanting our immigration laws respected and enforced.
Probably because no rationally-thinking adult believes that it's really about "law and order" and respecting immigration laws. It's mostly about keeping out non-whites. Trump support is heavily built on the idea that white people are victims and are under threat from the hordes of multiculturalism.
