John Mitchell, Nixon's Attorney General, went to prison for his role in Watergate.
Elliot Richardson, Mitchell's predecessor, resigned rather than breaking the law by obeying Nixon's orders.
His resignation didn't hurt Richardson any, for as soon as Nixon was gone, President Ford made him Ambassador to the UK first, and then appointed him Secretary of Commerce later. The Senate speedily confirmed both appointments.
By doing the right thing, Richardson also became the Hero of Watergate.
I'm sure Mitchell's fate is something Barr remembers. He must remember Richardson's fate too.
Both Mitchell and Richardson were strongly partisan Republicans and Nixon loyalists. Their biggest difference was one chose to obey Nixon and break the law, and the other did not. One decision cost the guy his job. The other guy's decision sent him to prison for 19 months.
Sometimes doing the ethical thing, even if it comes with a cost, has the very best outcome that is possible in a rotten situation. Barr might be a toady, but he isn't a stupid toady.
Trump ordered Barr to hold a news conference declaring that no laws had been broken by what Trump said on the call.
He declined to do so.
If this story is true, and who knows anymore, it is not surprising. Despite all the cries otherwise of those with their own agenda, Barr has always been a straight shooter whose primary loyalty is to the law as he interprets it, not Trump. He really was appalled with what he suspected as spying on a presidential campaign, not spying on Trump. There is a difference.

Of course, Trump asked Barr to hold a press conference on how his Ukraine bribery and extortion scam was all perfectly legal. This is Trump's M.O. It would be out of character if he hadn't asked.
Barr committed felony obstruction of justice with his dishonest summary of and redacting of the Mueller report. Documents obtained via FOI requests are making this clearer by the day.
So if Barr would do that for Trump, why not hold a press conference to lie about bribery and extortion being perfectly legal? Why draw the line here?
This is not the first time Barr has been involved in coverage up criminal behavior.
He was Bush I's AG providing support for Bush to pardon six Reagan officials, including Defense Secretary Weinberger, for Iran-Contra crimes which violated the Constitution as well as legislation passed by Congress. Those pardons completed the coverup and protected not only Reagan but Bush's involvement in the felonies.
He's only willing to protect tRump if it doesn't put his own lard butt at serious legal jeopardy. He's no brave exemplar of draining swamps or making anything great.
Hope they find something on Barr. He needs to spend some time in jail. Only now it appears he has a spine. His job description doesn’t include being another stooge for Trump.
