How many Presidential debates will there be in 2020 if Biden is the Democrat’s candidate for President?
Trump has indicate he may not participate in any presidential debates in 2020. Depending on the candidate that may not be a bad strategy given the deck will be stacked by the media against him. But what if Biden is the candidate?
My view is Biden’s strength is in the warm nostalgic feeling he gives the Democratic base, in terms of their memory, warm fuzzy thoughts of Obama, for the Democrats a better feeling of the nation as a whole; I think that is why Biden polls well. Biden use to have a sort of rough charisma, but it is long gone. But people remember that charisma fondly.
But, and there is a huge but, there is reality. And that reality hits you square between the eyes every time you see Biden on the stump. He walks like an old man. He thoughts are often incoherent, he has demonstrable trouble remembering where he is, what he has actually done, and what year it is, he comes across as man in the early stage of dementia.
I honestly think Biden might be able to pull off a win if he can sequester himself and get people to vote on the man and times they so fondly remember; voters are that stupid. But in order for that to work that means that have to keep Biden under wraps in order to nurture the image of the man who once was verses the empty shell of the man they will see before them.
At some point the Democrats are going to have to consider Biden’s strengths and weaknesses as well as Trump’s. And Trump will be considering them too. My guess is, the Democrats will come to realize they need to control the access to Joe. With their pick of moderators softballing and controlling things they may be able to get Joe through one debate without too much damage. But once Trump gets a feel for Joe he will expose him in any second or subsequent debate. If there is more than one debate, Trump will take it into the weeds an expose Biden as a weak, feeble, confused old man. Remember as vindictive and quick tempered as Trump can be, he can also control himself. Biden, now, has even worse temperament and has repeatedly lost control. Trump would bait Biden and Biden will fall for the bait, eventually. So Trump would be a fool to agree to just one debate, where the deck will be stacked against him. Trump will want three debates to give him time to find an opening to expose Biden, though he may settle for two.
So the Democrats are going to have to choose. Go debate less and hope the nostalgia effect pulls Biden over the finish line in the swing states or so tightly control any debate it will simply reinforce the idea that the media is totally corrupt and simply an extension of the Democratic party. The latter will will not play well with independents. On his end, Trump would likely happily go no debates and simply do MAGA rally after MAGA rally. But I also bet he would be chomping at the bit to get a crack at ol’ Joe’s jugular on the debate stage.
Biden's side will cancel the debates and blame it on Trump.
I also think there is a a 25% chance he dies before November, and that is not a joke. A man in his condition should not be doing this to himself.
Joe's already had 2 brain aneurysms. Now approaching 80 he wants 4 years as President? Absurd he's even being considered.
