So - John Oliver takes coal in general to task, in the process grilling Murray Energy and their CEO Robert Murray to a fine crisp, as one does. Meh, no one cares, silly comedian, forgotten in a week, right? Wrong. Robert Murray decides that this shall not pass and decides a lawsuit is called for.
It turns out that Murray is litigious as all out, but he normally goes after local papers and whatnot, not HBO.
So this is turning from a silly skit to a spectacle actually worth watching. Because it's a given that HBO has access to very, very good attorneys. And there's a back bench of First Amendment lawyers salivating at the chance of getting their amicus curiae briefs in the spotlight. And John Oliver will - if you'll parden the expression - mine this for all the comedic material that can be extracted.
Robert Murray is about to encounter the Streisand effect. This will be fun.
I will admit it, my bad. Focus on the SNL snafu, I completely delivered the perfect excuse for avoiding the touchy subject of a coal baron trying to use the legal system to silence a comedian who made fun of him.
Oliver purposefully dangled the bait, and Murray bit.
Stay tuned for the next episode.
I watched the segment. It was really funny.
Oliver's staff is really good about fact-checking. While everything he said cast the CEO in a bad light, I have no doubt it's all true. So what's to sue for?
