his previous comment regarding Remembrance Day (Canada’s version of Veterans Day):

“You people... love our way of life, love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada.”
Context? Who are the "you people" he was referring to?

So he wants immigrants to wear poppies too. What's wrong with that? Am I missing something here. I mean they certainly don't have to, but wouldn't it be nice.

Never heard of the guy until today but he's my kind of guy: anti- politically - correct.

Never should have lost his job for speaking his mind.

Are you suggesting that WWI was a legit war?

Of course, as he should. They are enjoying the fruits of others' labor and sacrifice. And being ingrates about it.

Immigrants. The OP's quote is incomplete, but if you watch the clip (available from a number of Canadian news sources, such as CTV, CBC. Global, and a host of other sources), Cherry's remarks before and after the OP's quote make it clear that he is referring to immigrants. This was all over Canadian news today, with the clip in question replayed over and over.

Cherry has a history of making controversial remarks on his segment of Hockey Night in Canada. Mostly, they have to do with hockey ("European players don't know how to hit like our Canadian players do; even Americans are better at hitting than those wimpy Europeans" would be a typical example), and he rarely strays outside the hockey context. Still, in spite of complaints from viewers about his more outlandish hockey remarks, the networks have given him a lot of latitude. My guess is that this latest remark, well outside of a hockey context, was the straw that broke the camel's back.

It's time for him to hang up his skates anyway. He's 85 years old, and the game that he played in and coached years ago, is not the game of today. Today's game emphasizes skills over fighting (Cherry loves hockey fights), and welcomes players from all over the world if they can make the pro cut (Cherry played and coached at a time when most players in the NHL were Canadian and most of the rest were American, and other countries couldn't produce hockey players that were up to the North American caliber). Today, it's a different game than Cherry coached and played.

I'm sure that Cherry would have preferred to resign on his own initiative eventually, but I'm equally sure that he's not caring much about this. He very well-off, and doesn't need the job, and if he prefers to fade away after today, that's his business.

As Chevy pointed out, the quote the OP used is incomplete. What he said was

"You people that come here… whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy,”

It's offensive in it's ignorance. First of all, does he know who is an immigrant and who isn't? I'm betting, and many took it this way, that he is thinking only of non-whites. He lives in an area with a lot of people from India, and may have been referring to them. Again, ridiculous, since India was a contributor and an ally during the Second World War.

This piece is pretty good at explaining why his comments were so offensive. Plus hockey is seen as the great equalizer in Canada. He overstepped.

NO, and you know that is not what was being suggested. Pilot was suggesting that the poppy isn't about war, or heroine but about remembering and paying respect to those who served during war.

This is where the hard left reveal themselves. They just can't help themselves. Most hard left never served, will never serve and would do anything to get out of serving. They hate Trump's bone spurs, only because getting a quack to provide a BS excuse was a ploy of the rich. The left would have done it too if they had the connections. It's a jealousy issue rather than a moral issue to them.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's. School kids wore the poppy. We all knew what it meant. Most of us had fathers and grandfathers who had served in the military. It was about showing respect to our Vets who had been sent to war by our government. Our soldiers don't get a choice in where they are sent.

People who weren't participating in Remembrance Day.

Granted it could be about protecting poppy fields. I wonder if only American troops did that though?
