I'm also a software dev that has done work in AI systems, and I cringe at the public perception of this.
This idea that we are even close to something like Skynet taking over the world couldn't be more absurd.
We are talking about systems programed by humans to carry out very specific tasks, and people are upset because the greater efficiency of data analysis in very specific applications is taking away the need to apply a greater amount of lower efficiency manpower to solve the same problems.
The other thing most people need to understand is that most things that are called AI are not general intelligence projects, though research on general intelligence does exist and is attempting to be modeled using computing systems.

It's not just coming for blue collar jobs, but white collar jobs as well.
Suri and Alexa are learning ... and the IoT.
As one person put it, they thought they were using Google and Facebook, not realizing they were using them.
Someone people should look into for some interesting insight on this topic is Jaron Lanier. I believe he asks some great philosophical questions regarding AI and our role with it. He has quite a few youtube videos.

How do you what deep dark technology they have lurking in the deep black projects? Its amazing to read some of the capabilities of the NRO 8-10 when we first found out this agency exists,...its 2019 now, God only knows what they have now, but Id bet it makes tech from 10 yrs ago look ancient!!
Thats the thing about this 'secret spying', the american public is only aware of SOME methods and technology they use to do this, we should be most scared of the stuff NO ONE knows about.

99% of companies I've seen claiming "we use AI for..." are using Finite State Machines. Not a NN, or GA in sight.
There's a lot of data scrubbing needed before training. The AI is a product of the data its fed, so bad data leads to bad AI.
Indeed you can compromise your training data through including or discarding data that may or may not (respectively) be considered of relevance. This results in an AI that performs as expected, but since the expectation is invalid ultimately so is the AI.

If you're not paying for a service, you can guarantee the company providing it is making more money by your presence and use of the service than they could make by charging a fee.
As I always tell people Google isn't really a search engine, it's an advertising agency.
