I've talked about the wider scale consequences of this already. I just need you to resist, I don't care that everyone else is doing it or whatever.

Read a book, watch a movie, or take a walk outside. Two of those thinks are marketed products (books/movies) but ownership keeps it from being too bad.

At least watch Netflix, just don't hop on the bandwagon please.
In the interest of fairness, here's the consumerist point of view.

Doing the free preview now. Awesome app, lots of programming, easier to navigate than Prime, and if I keep it it's only $70 per year.

Netflix was entertaining for about a year. It cost more than Disney+ does.

Prime is useful for when I need to indulge my "consumerism". It also offers a mediocre streaming experience with more b-list material than Hollywood hits arranged in a haphazard clustering system that is nearly impossible to navigate through the app.

Disney+ offers entertaining programming. It offers a lot of programming of far better overall quality than Netflix or Prime. It has an easily navigable Firestick app that organizes the content into recognizable categories that don't resemble the demented meanderings of a junkie (yes, Prime, I'm looking at you). Anyone, of any age group, could find something to watch in the available content. Yes, it's all Disney owned content. From the original classics to recent hits, including studio content that Disney acquired. It has Marvel movies, including all but the most recent releases. It also has Marvel TV shows. And bonus content. Same with Star Wars. It has National Geographic content. The one thing I have an issue with is the lack of pause and rewind function through the app on the firestick. Hopefully that will be remedied soon.

I don't have to worry about setting up child locks on Disney+. Nothing on there is anything that I would strenuously object to my children watching. For a family, it's just about the perfect streaming service from what I've seen so far.

ETA: The pause/rewind issue is resolved. Operator error. The app doesn't respond the same as other streaming apps, you have to press circle down on the firestick remote to get to controls.

Probably will start on it tomorrow. I’ll let you know what I think of it.

There is a reason I'm putting this on the POC sub-forum, and that's because of my problem with this ongoing event.

I still have an old VCR of Micky Mouse house of Villains, and Dark-wing Duck use to be my favorite show as a kid.

But this streaming service is just a ploy to increase corporate profits and drive marketing into a larger portion of our daily media digestion.

Americans talk a big game about fighting corporations, preferring smaller businesses, etc.

But when push comes to shove they all fall over in embrace for whatever product their corporate overlords have packaged for them this time.

How are we suppose to become a better society when people jump at the chance to throw their pocket money at a big private capital holding (company) and generate stock value appreciation.

This is the type of culture people at the top want, a passive society that is a consumer first, and a member of civil society second.

Stop getting excited for this and learn to control yourselves.
So you have decided that you are the moral authority?

It’s a free country to spend your money as you see fit.

The company is what matters, not the product.

I'd prefer people consume higher priced/lower quality goods/services if it means we are not funneling money towards multi-platform concentrations of capital (like Disney and amazon).

Higher prices are good for consumer products since they mean less consumption (usually) but I get how in the subscription model it won't have that affect since you're getting the same amount of content anyways.

I don't like the subscription model, but I get why tech companies use it.

We're just talking, and this has to do with society.

Its not about individual lifestyle, its about how the consumer choices of the public affect capital distribution and private investment in public goods (like housing or electricity).

People who would normally be critical of Disney's monopolistic practices are jumping on the bandwagon, and this lack of self control spells trouble for the well being of our society down the line.

How odd. I've heard several things lead to the downfall of humanity, mostly porn, masturbation, or atheism. This was the first time I heard Disney movies would cause our demise.

Its the company, not the product.

How consumers spend their money subsidizes big capital allowing them to invest in the public goods market (debt, housing, non-elastic services like medical care, etc.) and raise prices for everyone else so creditors can keep the population on a tight leash.

Its much more than the movies you watch, its the services you dedicate your time and money to (and don't forget about targeted advertisement, your time is money to corporate board rooms).

On the other side you rarely see a group of rabid lefties wearing NRA gear while eating at Chic-Fil-A. Why shouldn't the guys on the right practice the same political diligence? I admire the fact lefties avoid companies they disagree with politically. I want the right to lock up their wallets too.

There would be a lot less political BS emanating from all the big corps. if everyone spent their money based on their politics. Those big corps would just shut up and keep their politics to themselves. So would hollywood, which would be a real blessing.
