The police department wants to help people avoid becoming a victim of the scam. They said officers can assist people by weighing their purchase to ensure they didn’t get cheated out of what they paid for.
And of course, the police department is hoping people will be stupid enough to contact them about this, and even better, give them full info on their dealer. Hopefully the OP is not so gullible as to think this was a serious thing
