It's not just dental work, people are getting joint replacements done in Mexico for a small fraction of what it costs in the US. I think this is great since it puts pressure on the US system to fix its over-pricing. The main problem is that only a small fraction of people in the US can take the time to go to Mexico for healthcare so it is not much of a competitor to the providers in the US, except for maybe right along the border.

Even my "far right" BIL cannot handle the normal dental prices in Florida. He flew to Las Vegas years ago where he got a better quote.

There is zero doubt that the US Health Care system is -and has been - broken. There has been a movement since about 1990 to reform it but one particular political party and also the $$$ has made it impossible.

And so we spend 11K per person per year...double what many other countries spend...and get nothing for it (our life spans are actually decreasing).

This is Capitalism. It's simply the way it works. Get what you can even if it has to be borrowed from your grandkids. Of course, they hide the borrowing from you because if people truly understood it they might change.

I have friends that live near Palm Springs, CA and make regular trips to Algodones for dental work. Never had an issue and have saved a ton of money.

Where I live outside of Las Vegas the dentists, and most recently periodontists, charge an arm and a leg and recommend procedures that you have to question if their really necessary.

Algodones works. A few points.....don't drive over that crossing, park in the giant lot with the tiny sign. You CAN miss the parking lot and if you do the road allows no U turns, you will go across the border. If you do, get any forbidden stuff out before you go back out....no pepper spray NO ammo or obviously weapons. Get caught and your stay will be 5 to 10 years as a guess. There is a little pop-up with federales and they miss nothing. During snowbird time in winter 30,000 go back and forth every day.

There is a casino for $100+ a night about a mile away out by the interstate.

Waiting rooms are filled with folks from all over. Some fly into Phoenix and get a car. If you need major stuff give yourself some cushion on the time, an extra day or two makes it easier on you and them.

Some of those docs probably lost a bundle at Green Valley Ranch and need to recoup their losses.

Medical and dental tourism to Mexico is huge. Americans near the border buy their pharmaceuticals in Mexico and save 90% on their prescription costs.

Yes.

I never thought I’d see the day when Americans had to rely on Mexico’s healthcare system.

There are massive hospitals in India and Thailand and elsewhere being built almost specifically for US Patients - those who need heart and other expensive operations.

The day of reckoning has been here for decades....only it is hidden from the general public due to the power of the lobbyists, etc.

There was a good reason that an attempt was made to start down the right path back in 1994 or so. That puts us about 25 years behind where we should be.

The sad fact is that Americans will put up with about anything.

Mexico is one thing. In rural TN and WV and MO there are giant tent clinics held at fairgrounds and patients are actually kept in the pig styes. These patients, in general, go to the polls and continue to vote against their own interests. But, hey, they are well entertained by talk radio and TV, so there is that!

Ever since I can remember, people have been going across the border for medical and dental care. Even when our medical care was cheaper they did this. Some people like to save a buck, I don't blame them.
