This is true. During the recession of the early 1990s, it was well known then the welfare shoppers moved from St Louis to the Twin Cities for the better welfare benefits.

Lots of good deals on Section 8 housing to get through the winter for welfare shoppers, huh?

How many jobs did they add? South Dakota's population is so small that adding 100 jobs may be a BOOM there. Need to see more information before jumping to conclusions.

Comparing a small farm state to MN is a bit of a stretch.

No idea on answers but how does it compare to WI which it shares a major metro area with?

Surely more of them than North Dakota.

The bikini principle - what a statistic uncovers is interesting, but what it conceals is essential.

Red China saw a 100% increase in tractor production in 1949, for instance. Admittedly, they only made one tractor in 1948, but still.

The OP doesn't see information and jump to conclusions; he concludes then looks for vague or misleading statistics that appear at first glance to support his conclusion.

Just to counter some of the stereotypes of South Dakota, certain communities in the state are getting a very diverse cross section of migrants due to their tight job market. As an example, one elementary school in Huron is now 34% Hispanic and 23% Asian ... and many of these young people will be voting by the 2030s. It remains to be seen if they will find the Republican party as much of a fit as the more predominantly white local adult population does today. https://www.schooldigger.com/go/SD/schools/3548001370/school.aspx
