Im all for open carry without a license too, but half the idiots around here that carry a gun, seem to want everyone to see that they are carrying a gun.

One piece of anecdotal evidence. I guess that settles the matter.

We should do away with banks too. They get robbed. Same with schools, I know a kid who failed so that means we should shut down schools.

Think things through much?

Anyone hazard a guess at the statistical probability of this happening?

Probably one in millions. I live in an open carry state and I have never heard of it happening.

Open carry has been the law in PA forever, it's rarely done and has never been an issue. Personally I wouldn't do it, I want to be the one doing the surprising. I still support the law because it prevents some overzealous cop from harassing me because I decided to walk over to my Cousin's house a block away with a gun exposed.

That's bad odds when the sky is falling.

Here in SD Gore made it impossible to get CCW so the only option was open unloaded. Since it was heading to the courts he finally started issuing permits. Apparently LE doesn't like legally armed citizens.

This is why people who want to carry should avail themselves of some good training in the methods of situational awareness. A gun isn't a magic charm that wards off evil. It is a tool and, like the hammer and saw, it's proper use requires training. Since it is a complicated tool, it requires complicated training.

I support open carry as a right, but think it is a poor option for several reasons:

It attracts undue attention from law abiding citizens who then often become uncomfortable. It draws the attention of criminals as in this case and puts the person carrying at potential risk. It gives others the impression the person carrying is looking for trouble, and that impression can be used against them in court in the event of a self defense shooting. It eliminates a key element of surprise by alerting the criminal/attacker the person carrying is armed. It invites the criminal to shoot the person carrying first to eliminate a potential threat. Law enforcement showing up has to stop and deal with a person open carrying before they can advance further to the criminal.

There are other disadvantages to open carry. But although it is a tactical error in my opinion, i still support the right of people who wish to open carry. I just think concealed carry is far superior tactically.
