Be honest. I have yet to hear any gun owner make the distinction "except for Trump."
I have never heard them say that the second amendment was only to counter government tyranny. Although after Waco and Ruby ridge it does cause one to think about it. Who was the President for those events?
Those were just plain murder by the government. At Ruby Ridge a unarmed woman holding a child was murdered and no one was brought to justice, because the killer had a badge.
I feel horrible for the guy's family, but rule one of concealed carry should be if you're going to shoot someone, you better be a decent shot, as non-paper targets sometimes shoot back.
Bottom line, here we have one life ended, and two turned upside down, all due to the presence of a gun.
Note that the two robbers may have just wanted money to buy food for their starving children. Who knows, they may have been days away from enrolling in college, and turning their lives around. Now they are on the run, and will be charged with murder if caught.
Deadly force can only be used to protect life, not to protect property.
Just because someone is robbing you, does not give you the right to use deadly force.
If however, you are threatened with a deadly weapon, you can respond to an imminent threat to life.
...
Having said that ... 2 vs 1 are not good odds.
If the robbers were 'satisfied' with what they got and were leaving, the best choice was to let them leave.
At the same time, if they were displaying weapons the instant they walked in, shooting them dead would be the best choice if you are accurate and fast enough. This store owner was not. He made bad choices in a number of ways. Having a gun was not one of them.

One life ended, and two upended, all because of the presence of a gun where a gun did not belong.
Note that this would not have happened just a few years back. Texas did not have concealed carry until George W Bush signed it into law as TX governor.
There is another rule, which is the fact that a concealed weapons license does not make you a police officer. If you see a robbery, you call the cops, and let the store owner recoup his losses from insurance. Don't play John Wayne in a pawn shop, especially if its not even your shop.
This was stressed many times when I took the concealed carry class.
Good post. It's a good thing no one else was hit in the gunfire. This is a prime example of when not to shoot especially since you're basically protecting someone's property which he could presumably get back from insurance.
So much for a pawn shop being the last place you want to rob, too
