President Trump signed two bills Wednesday supporting human rights and democracy in Hong Kong. The first is "The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019," and the second is a bill banning sales of rubber bullets and tear gas to the Hong Kong police.

The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 requires an annual certification that China is respecting Hong Kong's rights of autonomy and that it is also respecting the 'human rights' of the people of Hong Kong. While China gives lip service to Hong Kong's autonomy through its "One country, two systems" propaganda, the whole idea of human rights is loathsome to the Chinese, as they routinely demonstrate by brutalizing and terrorizing their own people.

Quote:
China threatens 'countermeasures' after Trump signs Hong Kong pro-democracy bills

BEIJING: China on Thursday accused the US of harbouring "sinister intentions" and warned of "countermeasures" after President Donald Trump signed a bill supporting pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. The Chinese Foreign Ministry's statements came just hours after Trump signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 into law.

The bill would require the State Department to certify once a year that Hong Kong is sufficiently autonomous to retain its special US trading consideration -- a status that helps its economy.

Reacting to Trump's move, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said: "This is a severe interference in Hong Kong's affairs, which are China's internal affairs. It is also in serious violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations. The Chinese government and people firmly oppose such stark hegemonic acts," the statement said. "The nature of this is extremely abominable, and harbours absolutely sinister intentions."
Apparently Chinese President Xi Xinping was hoping to bully President Trump into actually vetoing these bills, both of which were passed nearly unanimously by both houses of Congress. Of course that was never going to happen, but if President Xi had been a bit more gracious and respectful towards President Trump with regards to this issue, it probably could have been arranged for President Trump to delay signing these bills until after the Phase one trade agreement between the US and China was signed.

But Xi could not control himself and tried to play the bully. You can see just how belicose that Xi and the Chinese are being by the quotes in the article above. So now he will have to find a way to accept losing face on this subject, as he clearly has, on his way to signing this trade agreement, which will invariably be a loss of face for Xi as well.

Well done, President Trump. I am sure all of you who had previously expressed your desire that he should sign these bills will want to give kudos to President Trump for agreeing with you and getting this done.

I will certainly do so.

I hope his support was genuine, and I have no reason to believe it was not, so I will say well done also.

The near universal support in Congress meant it was destined to become law either way.

The US has enough sins of its own to account for before lecturing other countries on human rights.

Trumpers confuse me.

First when Trump backed Xi Trump supporters said Trump was right we had no business interfering in the internal affairs of other nations.

Now Trump interferes in the internal affairs of China and they are praising him.

Trump has went back and forth on Hong Kong more times then a ping pong ball.

I tell you Trumpers have no core values. If Trump reverses course Trumpers will praise him.

Having said that at least for today Trump is right.

Countdown to when Trump reverses himself:

Trump can’t reverse on this. Senate passed 100-0, House 417-1.

That’s why I said I hope his support was genuine.

At no time has Trump backed Xi. He has been diplomatic with Xi, he has been a statesman with Xi.

Which is what lefties pretended to want.

He thinks it is leverage
He doesn’t give a toot for the protestors in Hong Kong—
He expects to deal with the same situation when he loses the election and won’t leave the Oval...
He is just trying to keep any middle of the road GOP politicians in his corner by seeming to have a heart
