I don't think people realize how much the bases in Germany are used as a lay over/refueling.....etc....post for all kinds of American military operations.

Yes, there is also a military hospital in Germany where many wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan were treated. Many missions in Mid-East were flown out of bases in Turkey.
Saying "close them and bring troops home" tickles the ears of the gullible, but it is very short sighted and would only end up costing us more.
I guess perception wise it takes out the 'world police' but at the same time the USA takes a great source of pride in being a military power. Would you rather Russia or China as the world police?
Someone is going to take on that title as a super power.
We aren't protecting European borders .....we are strategically placing ourselves around the world to protect ourselves and to hold on to that super power title.

Since most conservative who are like myself don't want any of our troops overseas, we don't see the point of military hospitals in places like Germany.
