Dems spend four year looking for a candidate after the 2020 election and decide to go back to Hillary Clinton in 2024. She'll be younger than Bernie or Biden are today.
I doubt Trump will be here in the spring of 2020. One way or the other Trump will exit the White House and at his present rate of decline Trump will not see the 2020 spring flowers.

Nothing drastic will happen. It will be business as usual. Four years comes and goes very fast and then on to the next POTUS.
The most pressing issue to me is immigration and demographic change. If we get a biden or Sanders to continue the browning of America, Republicans and any opposition to the Democrats is demographically doomed. We will soon have one party domination like California.
