They've set a precedent, unwisely, and damaged their party. They also most likely will help with Trump being re-elected.

The true damage though, could come if they lose control of the House next year. Remains to be seen.

What seems to be lost in this is that the Senate Intelligence Committee has come to a conclusion, in a bipartisan manner. Romney is not the only Republican who is likely to cross party lines.
