The only proven ways to decrease abortions are sex education and access to contraceptives.

In terms of pre-marital sex. Come on, it’s almost 2020...who cares about that at this point?

Republicans demand "abstinence-only" sex education and want contraceptives banned. In their ideal society, it wouldn't surprise me if there would be punishment for young women who have sex out of wedlock.

The USA has been hijacked by radical right-wing theofascists. Frightening times we are living through.

What utter delusional BS! The ultra-Fundies simply don't have the numbers to impose their will upon the rest of us. And they form only a small "dinosaur" faction within a Republican party which is steadily losing numbers, but mostly to the Libertarians, who will coalesce with the Republicans -- and more importantly, against the increasingly radical Leftist Democrats -- but on economic issues only. Most Libertarians are completely secular with regard to social issues.

I disagree. Right now, the ultra-Fundies DO control the GOP and are the driving force behind Trumpism. Maybe in 15-20 years when younger generations replace the boomers, what you say will become true. Our country will be so much better of for it, if our constitutional republic lasts that long.

What I don't get is how sometimes young adults will have unprotected sex then the woman gets surprised she is pregnant onl to get an abortion. If you are to have unprotected sex, either wait until you are married or do it with your true love and you have the resources to care for that kid(s).

This is the failure of sex education curricular that focuses on feel good social engineering instead of teaching the simple facts of life that will keep kids and older out of trouble.

Many kids have the strange notion that "you can't get pregnant the first time that you do it". That is stupid because everything is there and functional.

WE keep forgetting that first we are animals. Nature wants us to reproduce. And does all kinds of things to our heads to accomplish that.

All the sex education in the world will not stop some people when they are aroused. They are guilty of magic thinking.

Until someone comes up with a way to remedy that, their will always br unplanned pregnancies.

I'll try to locate the study done some years ago. They got some rational logical young men together, asked a few questions, gave them some porno magazines then monitored their response. It was pretty good bet that everybody looks good at closing time. Throw in magic thinking, and you get many unplanned for pregnancies.

The danger of pregnancy has not been much of a deterrent against premarital sex. Societal shame tends to work more. It used to be that a woman who was known for having premarital sex was regarded as "loose" or "easy". Such females would be shamed. See 5:07-6:47 of the clip below. Granted, this was the 1950s and I'm glad we're not in the 50s, but just the same, I recommend wait

When people have an "I don't care what you think" mentality, well, people are going to do what they please. I know several classmates who got pregnant while in high school. The danger of pregnancy didn't stop them. Anyone who shamed them got yelled at. Shaming is met with belligerence from the person being shamed.

to be fair it is the "religious right" who wish to get rid of birth control methods because it means people have sexual relations for pleasure and NOT procreation...this has been a tough sell to the rest of us
