the confederacy different military units had a conglomeration of different flags so much so that people died from friendly fire in the confusion...the "stars and bars" were an attempt to have a uniform flag to prevent this battlefield confusion..
as far as what the flag represents..its different depending on who you talk too

But Southern blacks overall do not consider the Confederacy to be their heritage. All of my ancestors were from the Deep South, but still, the CSA is not a part of our heritage although my whole family on both sides were there...toiling in slavery.
African Americans are an integral of the South. Always was. So if we reject the Confederate heritage argument, it cannot be said that the Flag is a universal symbol of Southern Heritage. It’s a symbol only for a decent sized sliver of the population down South.

The flag means different things to different people, give it a rest.
I suppose if the OP sees the rainbow flag hanging outside a bar, he thinks it means the owner must like rainbows.
What? Lol! That makes no sense.

Every object means different things to different people. So what? That’s not saying anything.
Quibbling over her words (instead of asking her to clarify, especially in light of her more expansive comments in 2015) is nothing more than gotcha politics at their worst.
Still, regardless to whether some want to believe it, the Confederate Flag was not and is not a hateful thing to everyone. And many people do not harbor hatred or racism in their hearts when they support the flag. That others view the flag as a symbol of racism and division does not change this reality. Both are valid viewpoints held by many in this country.
The confederacy, that fought AGAINST the United States of America.
Its a reason why its called the Treasonous South.
Haley is just trying to position herself because removing the flag is gonna be a huge issue with southern white voters, and they’re the actual Republican base.
The old "Heritage, not hate." canard will never die, it seems.
It doesn't matter how many "normal" southerners didn't own slaves or how "many" families view the intent to secede.
It's right there in the Articles of Secession and the Declaration of Causes for each state. Can't argue with those documents.
