When Trump was giving one of his NATO pressers earlier this week, he was asked if he supported the Iranian demonstrators. His answer was "no, it's complicated" which struck me as peculiar at the time. Now we know why not. Trump turned his back on the anti-government demonstrators being butchered by the Ayatollah in Iran to get this "win". Clearly this is another quid pro quo where the national security interests of the US took a back seat to Trump's desire to improve his political standing. This one, though, was probably legal.

Did I just say that??
Is that something like trading 5 Muslim terrorists for a deserter?

Sure we should have left a soldier behind then you would still be whining about not supporting our military.

US grad student held in Iran on spy charges since 2016 released, heads home

“The highest priority of the United States is the safety and well-being of its citizens. Freeing Americans held captive is of vital importance to my Administration, and we will continue to work hard to bring home all our citizens wrongfully held captive overseas.”
When is Trump going to get around with doing me a good thing as a member of the middle class masses? Inflation ate up much of the money from tax cuts while Trump ran the national debt further up. Much of the Trump presidency has been about him and his idle boasts.

So you're saying we should be meddling in the internal affairs of a foreign nation? Got it.

Exchanging a grad student for a high-level scientist doesn't sound like a "win" to me.

And if the well-being of American citizens was their highest priority, they wouldn't be gutting environmental safety regulations.
