The current numbers are 46.5 for and 46.5 against and the numbers are swinging pretty harshly against impeachment right now. That will continue to be the case if Republicans choose to do a trial and beat up on Democrats. That's why there's no way the Republicans in the Senate will do the right thing and just dismiss the articles immediately. A trial guarantees re-election for Trump and the Republicans taking back the House.

The only people who think the Dems have pissed on their shoes in this matter are the trumpers. They aren't going to change their minds no matter how poorly their guy damages America. We know that he would burn America to the ground if he thought there was something, generally financial, in it for himself.

There is no doubt that the Repubs are not going to support an impeachment unless there is some additional heinous behavior by the dotard.

As such, get the facts out, let Roberts run the trial, have the vote and move along.

It is sad that we can have such criminal behavior in this president and people would put politics and party over Nation.

But that is the way it is. Get it done as professionally as possible and at least America will have the knowledge that we did things properly, even if the outcome was political. That is a burden those who support this clown have to bear, and it will come back to haunt them when they think it is least likely. That is what happens to bad people. And they will deserve it...in spades.

The Senate needs to give voice to the Republicans without being shut down by the committee Chairman like was done in the Democrat Run House. This needs to be done with witness testimony so that the opposing facts can be aired. A rush to quash the impeachment will not allow the whole truth to come out for public consumption. If it drags out until November so be it.

You realize the Republicans run the Senate - right?

The approach should be showing there is ZERO evidence and repeating it non-stop.

Make these "witnesses" testify it's only their opinion over and over again ad nauseum.

Trump wants a big production. I think McConnell wants to avoid that embarrassment.

I'll be stocking up on organic popcorn for the sham trial. Let the entertainment commence.

I don't know if the numbers are swinging against impeachment or not. At least not by this article.

What the Dems and Pubs think is nearly irrelevant. They're going to vote along party lines nearly every time. Of course, turnout can vary; as we saw in 2016 when Hillary couldn't excite the Dem base to turnout, but even still, that didn't determine the ultimate outcome.

It's the Independents knowing the "Dems have pissed on their shoes" that is the critical point here. Independents choose the President. Recent polls have them running away from the Dems, due to the AOC/Bernie/Warren Socialism element of the party, and their recent shams...Kavanaugh, Russia, & Ukraine.

The Independents have also not forgotten the whoppers told about Obamacare..."like your doctor, keep your Doctor", "like you healthcare, keep your healthcare", and "you'll pay less". THAT is the Elephant in the room.

The Democrat party lost all credibility with Independents over Obamacare, & the Dems are doing nothing to regain it. In fact, the shams are just making matters worst. Even today, nearly 10% of American are STILL without healthcare insurance? Why? They can't afford it! THIS is the gaping wound the Dems have, the shams are just paper cuts.

The Senate should conduct a trial, call up onto the stand ALL of the partisan DOJ & FBI actors, and hold them accountable for their attempted coups. If that works its way up the food chain...so be it.

Look at the RCP average, it's considerably more reliable than a Newsweek article or any analysis based on one poll. Support for impeachment is at the lowest levels on record while opposition for impeachment is at the highest level on record. The current numbers among independents are 41.8 support to 45.6 oppose.

Public opinion is pretty clearly swinging against impeachment and I see no reason why a trial conducted by Republicans with the intention of making Democrats look bad would make that perception any better.
