The Convention covers five main areas: preventive measures, criminalization and law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, and technical assistance and information exchange. The Convention covers many different forms of corruption, such as bribery, trading in influence, abuse of functions, and various acts of corruption in the private sector.
International cooperation
Countries are bound by the Convention to render specific forms of mutual legal assistance in gathering and transferring evidence for use in court, to extradite offenders.

President Trump and the leader of Ukraine were REQUIRED by U.N. convention to find out what was going on in a possible crime between the two countries, and send the information to the other.
President Trump's call to Ukraine, did exactly that.
The ironic part is that, if Pres. Trump had NOT asked Zelinsky to find out what's going on with the investigation, the Democrat would have more reason to impeach him (though not much more) that they do now, this time for failing to uphold a treaty.
Poor Democrat fanatics. They just can't get it right. And the more they try to pretend they have a point, the sillier they look.
No the Ukraine would be required to turn over evidence or information regarding OUR investigations, not open their own investigations into US citizens.
IF Trump had opened an investigation into Biden here and asked them to assist, that would fall under the treaty. But that isn't what happened.
The treaty REQUIRES that the two countries cooperate. Obviously this includes Country A asking Country B to investigate a matter going on in Country B that involves clear corruption and quid-pro-quo by a citizen of Country A (Joe Biden bragging about withholding $billions if they don't fire a prosecutor investigating his son's company).
The idea that Joe Biden's party can impeach a President because he asked Ukraine to investigate corruption that the Treaty was clearly written to prevent, and mandates that the two countries cooperate on, is ludicrous.
You people are really bending over backward to pretend Trump did something wrong when he clearly didn't, aren't you?
To the Senate of the United States:
With a view to receiving the advice and consent of the
Senate to ratification, I transmit herewith the Treaty Between
the United States of America and Ukraine on Mutual Legal
Assistance in Criminal Matters with Annex, signed at Kiev on
July 22, 1998. I transmit also, for the information of the
Senate, an exchange of notes which was signed on September 30,
1999, which provides for its provisional application, as well
as the report of the Department of State with respect to the
Treaty.
The Treaty is one of a series of modern mutual legal
assistance treaties being negotiated by the United States in
order to counter criminal activities more effectively. The
Treaty should be an effective tool to assist in the prosecution
of a wide variety of crimes, including drug trafficking
offenses. The Treaty is self-executing. It provides for a broad
range of cooperation in criminal matters. Mutual assistance
available under the Treaty includes: taking of testimony or
statements of persons; providing documents, records, and
articles of evidence; serving documents; locating or
identifying persons; transferring persons in custody for
testimony or other purposes; executing requests for searches
and seizures; assisting in proceedings related to restraint,
confiscation, forfeiture of assets, restitution, and collection
of fines; and any other form of assistance not prohibited by
the laws of the requested state.
I recommend that the Senate give early and favorable
consideration to the Treaty and give its advice and consent to
ratification.

Yes it requires them to ASSIST us in our investigations, it does not require them to open investigations into American citizens. If Trump had opened an investigation through our DOJ, they would be required to assist in providing documents or evidence that they have regarding that investigation.
Has DJT ever read a treaty? What scenario do you imagine would cause him to pursue this as a result of a treaty? I know he likes to void them.
TRANSLATION: Oops, the conservatives caught us. We can't refute what they pointed out, but we especially hate this one. So we'll retreat into the usual clairvoyance and mindreading, and bash President Trump for what we imagine he might think. No facts needed, as usual.
If only Trump had followed the protocols of the treaty and had the DoJ request information related to an actual, legitimate investigation instead of trying to strongarm Zelensky into announcing a ginned-up one, he'd have done things in accordance with the treaty and would likely be in the clear. And in that case this thread would actually have merit.
So if Trump was fulfilling a treaty obligation, why did he ask for a favor rather than just remind Ukraine of their treaty obligation? And why not have the Ambassador do that? And why then did Mulvaney say on TV "Yes there was quid pro quo, get over it"? If it was a treaty obligation there is no need for any quid pro quo.

I have posted this at least twice. They glossed right over it.
