Mass shooters are afraid of gun free zones. They usually stop dead whenever they see the gun free zone sign.
The theater in Aurora was a gun free zone, as was Columbine High School. I've been to that theater, and my neighbor's kids were in that school when the shooting happened.

What other kind of defensive use are you referring to? Warning shots will land you in prison, at least in Florida, and even flashing (brandishing) a firearm is taken very seriously.
