They didn't have anywhere near enough support. There is another initiative, which will probably fail too. There has been lot of bed news about pot induced psychosis, suicides (teen suicides are up 60% in Colorado) etc, so maybe people are beginning to wake up.

Legalize marijuana group drops out of 2020 Florida ballot, won’t yet endorse rival campaign

https://www.sun-sentinel.com/marijua...2si-story.html

In an email to supporters Monday, leaders of the Regulate Florida ballot initiative, which called for the state to regulate marijuana in the same way as alcohol, acknowledged they would not collect the necessary petition signatures before the Feb. 1 deadline.

Because the signatures have 30 days to be verified by elections officials prior to the deadline, petitions need to be submitted by Jan. 1.

The group had 92,540 verified signatures as of Monday, well short of the required 766,200. The group had collected enough to trigger court and financial reviews.

All the warning signs are there

Car crashes, psychosis, suicide: Is the drive to legalize marijuana ignoring major risks?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...de/2915860002/

But as cultural acceptance of cannabis grows, opponents are warning of potential downsides.

These critics – doctors, police and auto safety officials, parents – point to stories and studies that link the drug to suicide, schizophrenia and car crashes.

Car crashes rose 6 percent from 2012 to 2017 in four states that legalized marijuana during that period – Nevada, Colorado, Washington and Oregon – a greater rate than in four comparable states that didn't, the Highway Loss Data Institute found.

Matt Moore is senior vice president at the institute, which is funded by the insurance industry.

"It makes me very nervous about highway safety as many more are considering legalizing it for recreational use," he says.

Elsewhere, in Arkansas they're currently circulating a petition to legalize rec marijuana.

Two woman recently submitted a petition to legalize rec to the Oklahoma Secretary of State, waiting approval. Some people don't like it because it allows municipalities a way to opt out, apparently copying after rec petitions in other states. Marijuana petitions are usually hard to get enough signatures, unless the promoters have the money to hire paid signature takers. In Oklahoma, 3 out of 4 marijuana legalization petitions from the past failed to get required number of signatures. The famous one that did barely got enough.

They may very well have gotten enough signatures, but enough were thrown out that the petition didn't get enough in the end. In Illinois, if you are going to be a write in candidate for an election, you have to get a certain number of signatures to get on the ballot. The rule is to get twice as many as you need, because close to half will be thrown out, either by Democrats or Republicans (whichever party views you as a challenger)

With marijuana, you have your Bible thumpers and Reefer Madness crowd who cluck they would never want to see the Devil's Cabbage legalized.

Hmmm, I wonder how the insurance industry feels about alcohol being legal, or its relation to highway safety?

Those wanting legal rec marijuana are going about this completely wrong...they should be having fundraisers to raise the 'pay off' amount, to make it legal for rec use.

I think we are about 15-20 years from critical mass on legalization. Right now the Christian Right is just too powerful and the opposition from the religious is just too fierce. Reefer madness thinking prevails at the current moment.

However, younger generations are overwhelmingly for it and that isn't going to change.

I hope they are prepared for the increase in car crashes, psychosis, suicide.
